Rahaf al-Qunun: Thai Authorities Pledge to Help Teenage Saudi Asylum Seeker

The head of Thailand’s immigration police has said the country will not deport a young Saudi woman who fled her family at the weekend, due to concerns for her safety.

Thai immigration officials had tried to return Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, 18, to Kuwait, where her family is.

She refused to board a flight to Kuwait City on Monday, and barricaded herself into her hotel room at Bangkok airport.

The teenager said she believed her family would kill her if she went back.

Ganduje Awards Contract for N2.4bn Cancer Centre

Kano State government has awarded a contract for the construction of a state-of-the-art centre for the treatment of cancer at the Muhammadu Buhari Specialists Hospital in the state.

Experts indicated that the centre whose contract was awarded for N2. 4 billion, was the first of its kind in any public hospital in Nigeria, adding that it would improve access to the treatment given that Nigeria as at date, has only nine cancer centres, six of which are presently not functioning.

Speaking during an inspection visit to the proposed project site, Gov. Ganduje explained that the project implementation would be supervised by consultants from Varian Medicals, a radiation oncology treatment and software maker with a view to ensuring that it was of international standard.

Stop Criminalising Attempted Suicide, Psychiatrist Urge FG
A Consultant Psychiatrist with the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Dr. Ayo Omotosho, has urged the Federal Government not to continue to criminalise attempted suicide, saying that it is usually caused by depression.

The psychiatrist made the appeal in an interview with newsmen on Monday in Ilorin,

He said that depression was a mental illness and people suffering from it deserved sympathy from the government and members of the public, rather than condemnation.

He said: “Depression is like any other illness. Depression is like every health condition. People suffering from it should not be put behind bars for attempting suicide.”

Following the debate, today, between Engr Buba Galadima who defected to the PDP from APC and Ita Enang, President Muhammadu Buhari’s senior special analyst on National assembly matters, Twitter users have taken to their various handles to air their views on the debate.

The debate is coming few hours after an audio leak reportedly suggested that APC chieftain, Rotimi Amaechi commented that president Buhari is incapable.

FG Commences 2019 with Attractive Savings Bonds Offer

The Federal Government has commenced the 2019 savings bonds sales by offering for subscription two-year savings bond at 12.12 per cent and three-year savings bond at 13.12 per cent, the Debt Management Office has said.

According to the offer circular obtained from the DMO website on Monday, the two-year bond will be due in January 2021, while the three-year bond will be due in January 2022.

It, however, did not state how much was offered, but added that the maximum subscription was N50m at N1,000 per unit, subject to minimum subscription of N5,000 and in multiples of N1,000.
