The oldest revelation known to man comes to you in this exaltation. The secrete to the great exploit of the devil to ruin God's creation is in the idea he sold to Eve in Genesis 3:4-5--the idea to be extraordinary. She wanted to be like God! Sharing in his infinite wisdom and radiance. How myopic it seems! Come to think of it, didn't Genesis 1:26 tell us that God made us in His own image and likeness? We see here how cunning the devil is, promising Eve what already was her own.
And because she, like most of her offsprings have come to no longer want the ordinary things of life, she was easily enticed by the desire to be extraordinary. Ordinary things like:- watching the beauty and radiance of the morning sun, the reflection and colours of sunset, the green vegetations; the Sun's reflection on the waters that refreshed the garden; the gold, rare perfumes and precious stones found in the country side of Havilah where the river Pishon flowed(Genesis 2:11-12); the sight of her husband returning safe from work wasn't good enough, neither his smile upon her rising , laughter during silly jokes and happy moments, his care of her and the garden; the view of the rivers Pishon, Gishon, Tigris and Euphrates didn't amaze her any longer; the chores of an ordinary house wife bored her; rulership of the rest of creation didn't satisfy her. Divinity itself was the forecast!
Her desire for the extraordinary surpassed her appreciation of the ordinary. Since then, mankind has followed suit.
It is easy to judge her thoughts as myopic and shallow. But to this day--her descendants--the human race has continually followed in this footsteps. Cobhams Asuquo in his song titled 'ordinary people' puts it beautifully:
"A child in the distance, playing in the rain
The sweet sounds of water flowing away
A construction worker coming home from work
The parents and their children going to Church
Happy little baby drools on your shirt..." All seems so ordinary and cheap. Yet, they're the fabric of true joy and fulfilment.
Let us consider ordinary David, the shepherd boy who brought down Goliath with a stone and a toy, the would be greatest king of Israel the lest of his father's seven sons. How about Jesus Christ, sweet little boy, the carpenter's son. If any one ever told the Jewish people of his time he'd be Messiah they'll probably laugh it off. Yet, two thousands years have come and gone he's still reverend as God and king.
Like Cobhams, I invite the faithful; let us have a world of ordinary people living life the way God wants us to--a world of peace, comfort, simplicity, humility and love of Him and our neighbours.
It is my prayers and hope that you come to see 'ordinary' as being part of the natural order, rather than something bad or undesirable, as it is perceived to be.
