8 Great Reasons To Use Night Mode by felasey1(m): 10:05am On Jan 11, 2019
1 Sleep Better
Want something that wakes you up better than caffeine? Just use your phone, tablet, or computer. Yes, the blue light emitted from those devices could be just as effective as drinking a cup of coffee. The short wavelength of blue light that comes from your devices signals your brain to wake up. Of course, that doesn’t always help during those midday slumps.

However, by enabling night mode on your devices, you take away the blue light. This allows your brain to to go back to your natural circadian rhythms and help you fall asleep faster and deeper. Of course, avoiding using your devices before bed works too, but most of us are guilty of checking emails, Facebook, and other apps before bed.

While some blue light is good and even necessary, overexposure is never good.

2 Reduce Dry Eye
If you’re using your devices for hours every day, night mode could save you from having to reach for eye drops throughout the day. The brighter light actually causes your eyes to dry out. By having a dimmer, red-toned light, it’s less harsh on your eyes. Think of blue light filters (or night modes) as the same as wearing sunglasses when going out in the sun.

In addition to enabling this feature, make yourself look away from your devices every few minutes for at least 10-15 seconds to give your eyes a break.

3 Reduce Eye Strain
Do your eyes feel gritty and even hurt sometimes? Too much blue light actually affects your eyes beyond just drying them out. Imagine looking at the sun behind clouds. Look too long and your eyes and head hurt. Eye strain is common with 65% of Americans reporting symptoms.

The same thing happens with your devices. Stare at your phone while scrolling through Facebook long enough and your eyes are going to feel strained. While blinking helps, filtering out the blue light helps even more. Reduce your eye strain and you’ll also reduce the headaches that come along with it.

4 Prevent Retinal Damage
Do you live on your phone, tablet, or computer? If so, you could be at risk for more than just eye strain. In fact, extremely heavy device users may be at risk for macular degeneration, which can cause blurry vision or even blindness. It’s an irreversible disease.

Blue light can be toxic to photoreceptor cells and once they’re damaged, they don’t repair themselves or grow back.

It’s important to note that this is still being studied and currently, studies show this only occurs with extreme use. For the average user, blue light from your devices won’t blind you, but it may make your eyes uncomfortable.

5 Reduce Risk of Depression, Diabetes, and Cardiovascular Issues
If you’re using your devices at night, all the blue light could affect far more than just your sleep. In fact, if you’re not sleeping enough, you could be at a much higher risk for depression, diabetes, and cardiovascular issues. Obesity is also a potential problem.

According to WebMD, 90% of people with insomnia (which can occur with regular late night blue light exposure) also have another major health condition. Once again, blue light isn’t all bad, and in moderate amounts can be good for your health. However, by using smartphones and tablets all the time, you get a much higher dose of blue light than your body needs.

6 Improve Battery Life
Night mode doesn’t just help with your health. It’s also great for improving battery life on your devices. While there isn’t a set percentage you’ll save, night mode and blue light filters automatically dim the screen at least a little to reduce the strain on your eyes from screen brightness and blue light.

As a result, you get to use your devices longer between charges. Just remember, even with night mode on, you should still take regular breaks to prevent problems due to sitting too long or staring at a screen without blinking too long.

7 Keep Your Device Cooler
Much like with improving battery life, night mode can potentially keep your device cooler. A bright screen heats up your device faster. If you’re using it for longer periods, enabling night mode helps reduce the brightness to optimal levels.

Not only will your eyes thank you, but your device doesn’t get as hot as fast. Of course, other things, such as apps or viruses, may cause your phone or tablet to heat up more than it should as well.

8 Boost Your Mood
Natural blue light during the day helps to regulate mood and circadian rhythms (important for proper sleep). When you’re using your devices in the evenings and before bed, you disrupt your natural rhythms and your body’s ability to correctly regulate mood, including ability to handle stress.Teens and young adults, those who have spent most of their lives using tech devices, are starting to show an increase in mood disorders and blue light is partially to blame. By enabling night mode on all your devices, you’re taking back some control over your body’s natural mood regulation.
