Argentina Legend Diego Maradona's lawyer has confirmed the world cup winner is recovering in the hospital after a successful operation to stop internal bleeding caused by a hernia.

The 58-year-old former national captain and manager discovered the problem at a routine hospital check-up this month.

He had the operation on Saturday to stem bleeding in his stomach.

His lawyer Matias Morla said on Twitter: "Maradona's surgical procedure is over. Thank God everything went perfectly.

"Now we wait for the recovery so Diego can return to work as soon as possible."

MySportDab report doctors discovered the bleeding shortly before Maradona was due to fly to Mexico, where he is coach of second division side Dorados de Sinaloa.

He has had to use crutches on the touchline in recent months due to ongoing problems with his knees.

Maradona plans to return to manage the club for a second season when his recovery is complete.
