Nigeria is set to
save about N127billion annually
in foreign exchange
conservation annually along the
value chain with plans to pass
into law the local content bill on
20 per cent cassava flour
inclusion.
The federal government also
hopes to generate about three
million jobs from this effort.
In order to drive the bill, Federal
Ministry of Science and
Technology has set up a
committee known as
Competitiveness Assessment
Committee (CAC). This will
increase effectiveness, service
delivery and healthy rivalry
among the institutes under the
ministry.
According to the federal
government, the ultimate aim of
the whole exercise is to promote
local industrial development,
discourage importation of the
same technology and equipment
that are locally manufactured to
create a better platform for
balance of trade and improve the
condition of local currency in the
economy.
The committee comprises both
national and international
agencies to investigate and
measure the rate of healthy
competition among the 17
research institutes under the
ministry. Among the agencies
that formed the committee are
United Nations Industrial
Development Organization
(UNIDO), Nigeria Academy of
Science (NSA), Manufacturers
Association of Nigeria (MAN) and
some other agencies of both
national and international
recognition.
The 17 parastatals under the
ministry of science and
technology were adequately
scrutinized by the committee and
at the end, Federal Institute of
Industrial Research, Oshodi
(FIIRO) came first, making the
agency to be entitled to the
reward of N1 billion which will
be added to their 2019 budget
as promised by the Minister, Dr.
Ogbonnaya Onu.
The second and third runner-up
would have N740 million and
N500 million as added budget
respectively.
While speaking with LEADERSHIP
in Lagos, the director general of
FIIRO, Prof. Gloria Elemo, said that
more efforts are underway to
improve industrialization in
Nigeria. She expressed
satisfaction with the outcome of
the investigation, saying that
FIIRO emerged as the best out of
the 17 agencies under Ministry of
Science and Technology because
of the visionary and capable
leadership that manned the
Institute.

We are tired of all this story. This was how government made a lot of farmers to cultivate cassava in large quantity and no buyer when ready for harvest. cassava is even cheaper than pure water now
