The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, that inflation rate in Nigeria increased to 11.44 percent in the month of December 2018.

In its inflation report today, the stats office noted that the rate was 0.16 percent points higher than the rate recorded in November 2018, which stood at 11.28 percent, adding that increases were recorded in all COICOP divisions that yielded the headline index.

The NBS said on month-on-month basis, the headline index increased by 0.74 percent in December 2018, up by 0.06 percent points from the rate recorded in November 2018, 0.80 percent.

It explained that the percentage change in the average composite CPI for the 12 months period ending December 2018 over the average of the CPI for the previous 12 months period was 12.10 percent, showing 0.31 percent point from 12.41 percent recorded in November 2018.

In addition, the urban inflation rate increased by 11.73 percent (year-on-year) in December 2018 from 11.61 percent recorded in November 2018, while the rural inflation rate increased by 11.18 percent in December 2018 from 10.99 percent in November 2018.

On a month-on-month basis, the urban index rose by 0.76 percent in December 2018, down by 0.07 from 0.83 percent recorded in November 2018, while the rural index also rose by 0.72 percent in December 2018, down by 0.06 percent from the rate recorded in November 2018, 0.78 percent, the NBS report said.

Furthermore, the corresponding 12-month year-on-year average percentage change for the urban index was 12.51 percent in December 2018, less than 12.83 percent reported in November 2018, while the corresponding rural inflation rate in December 2018 was 11.75 percent compared with 12.05 percent recorded in November 2018.

I need to arrange a crash course in finance and statistics for journalists

The information dispelled above tells very little.

Proper comparison inflation rates should have been in comparison to Jan 2018 not December 2018 because inflation is seasonally adjusted.

This part of the articles is the right direction

Furthermore, the corresponding 12-month year-on-year average percentage change for the urban index was 12.51 percent in December 2018, less than 12.83 percent reported in November 2018, while the corresponding rural inflation rate in December 2018 was 11.75 percent compared with 12.05 percent recorded in November 2018.

We got it right few minutes after the colonial lords left. After few hours of their departure, the Aviation sector started cracking, the roads started showing wears and tears.

The infrastructures started to crumble. Juss few hours huh? Now till date, the labour of the colonial lords and some well-meaning Nigerians have been in vain.

Who else doesn't believe Nigeria has had any "heroes past" save those ones that never partook in political thieving and jamboree

If you're looking for any hero/heroine, your dad or mom is a great example.

It will hit 12% by feb, election spending, budget implementation, etc. CBN may even be forced to raise interest rate by 200 basis points to lure investors to the economy and contain rising inflation rate.

It will start moderating by June, when will expect capital importation to start improving.

And someone will be praising the Nigerian State and the govt at the center!

When you leave the economy and keep on pursuing criminals without purging the criminals within, and when your policies are inimical to the economy, these are the results!

You don't blame the past for your ineptitude!

You take full responsibility of your actions or inactions

Restructuring is the way forward!

And that is why I stand with Atiku

Nigerians are wise now... Any politician who does not perform knows he will not smell that position again even Atiku knows this..so he will not think of making any mistake when he gets this position.... He knows he must deliver...

Atiku plan is a detailed plan to get Nigeria working again.

I have not seen what is in the next level plan...because it's not detailed and there is no restructuring in it!

Anyone is entitled to vote whomever he or she wants to vote for but in so doing , do not mortgage this economy again for total four years hardship as the next level stipulates!

Better than consensus forecast of 12% full year rate however not a good one for the average Nigerian considering that the effect of anticipated subsidy payment removal/reduction by the FG and minimum wage hike hasn’t effected yet . We are in for a turbulent 2019.

My take , on the fixed income end stay at the short end of the curve for the first half of the year . Gradually weigh into the bourse in Q1

Simple Practical answers to your question since you are arguing with data:

1) Please kindly compare and contrast the prices of goods and services during the periods been reviewed

2) compare and contrast the money flow in the hands of majority of Nigerians during the periods been reviewed

3) compare and contrast the FDI flow chart during the periods been reviewed

Nigeria under Buhari, has had much lower inflation rates than when Atiku was last in government.

In addition, inflation rate has been dropping for 2 years now, slightly rising in December, when an election is due is part for the course.
