The government of Ekiti State has implored the police and other security agencies in the country to investigate the former governor of the state’s allegation that he was being trailed by unknown gunmen.

According to a statement by the chief press secretary to the governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose should not be easily believed regarding his claim, describing him as someone “who can even arrange his own death to achieve whatever agenda he desires.”

The statement further said, “as part of their investigation of his (Fayose) claim that suspected hired assassins visited his Alapere, Ketu, Lagos residence on Sunday, the alarm could be one of the many antics of the former governor, aimed at drawing attention and sympathy to himself.

“While we do not want to jump into conclusions on the alleged assassination attempt, it has, however, become necessary that we remind Nigerians, especially the security agencies, of Fayose’s past records, as someone who is capable of ‘arranging’ anything to suit his purposes.”

Unfounded lies

Allaying its claim with what it called statement of facts, Mr. Ojo-Lanre, the governor’s spokesman said, “It is on record that immediately Fayose assumed office as governor of Ekiti State in 2003, Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, started witnessing fire incidents. Then, Fayose was always the first person to get to the scene of the incidents.

“However, immediately two fire-fighting engines belonging to the former governor were purchased by the state government, the rampant fire incidents stopped.

He also alleged that Mr. Fayose arranged an attack on his own convoy on the Third Mainland bridge, to give the impression that his life was not safe, when he wanted to buy a bullet-proof vehicle in 2004. “He bought the bullet-proof jeep a week after,” he said.

The state government, however, called on all relevant security agencies to investigate the issue properly before jumping into conclusions.

The former governor, who was also alleged to be keeping a killer squad in the state while in office, had raised an alarm of threat on his life on Sunday, claiming that suspected hired assassins visited his Alapere, Ketu, Lagos residence.

Also in 2005, Mr. Fayose had said that he escaped possible death, following an invasion by suspected assassins alleged to have been keeping vigil at his residence at Iyaganku Government Reservation Area (GRA).
