Fellow Igbodefenders/Igbos/enthusiasts of Igbo ways of doing things,

In case you have found a hard time trying to understand how Igbos make their legendary wealth, read the following words on the subject by Ijaw intellectual Tari Nemi.

Igbos are culturally business people, they survive by buying and selling.

They believe that success comes from constant monetary exchange so they live that way and develop a system of training the younger generation from taking over from them through their mastership and apprenticeship system.

An American economics expert Robert Neuwirth recently called the Igbo

Apprenticeship System the largest business incubator platform in the world. He disclosed that Alana International Market, just one market built on the Igbo Apprenticeship System has a turnover of $4 billion dollars per year. Mr Neuwirth said that’s what the world needs.

Chinese American Professor, Amy Chua, in her insightful book World On Fire recognized the Igbos as a trading people.

So, the Igbos must never abandon trading. It is a part of our culture. I am delighted to note that no less a person than former CBN Governor Professor Charles Soludo is said to own several shops of his own. That’s the way to go!

Warning: You don’t need to invest your life savings in trading. You can just trade for fun. Initially, you can invest just enough money to enjoy yourself. If things get serious, then you could invest more.

If you as an Igbo cannot own a shop in a physical location, then own an online shop or engage in ethical/smart affiliate marketing. Or sell adverts on your blog. Or find ways to turn your social media account – FB, Twitter, Nairaland – etc to a money-making machine.

Have you thought of approaching people who make things/sell services and having an agreement with them that you market their products/services online in return for a commission?

You could also investigate the Drop Shipping business to see if there are any credible drop shipping companies worth partnering with. Note: Drop shipping is good but there are many bad eggs spoiling the good name of some exemplary drop shipping service providers.

Bottom line is this: Think of a way to make trading a hobby that you practice occasionally. It is Igbo to trade.

Olaudah Equiano, the icon of Equianoism used trading to buy himself off from slavery. When his master’s ship would sail from country A to country B, he would buy what was needed in country A in country B with part of his pocket money, and vice versa.

But beware of allowing greed and desperation grow in you. Some Igbo traders have abandoned the Igbo apprenticeship system because a lot of our youths have deviated and copied bad behaviours. These traders told me so.

So our youths must be properly guided. The Igbo apprenticeship system is one of the best aspects of Igbo culture. We must protect it from the get-rich-quick desperation and any abominations.
