Unclaimed Dividends: How to get them back

Having unclaimed dividends means that you have invested in the shares of a company.

A dividend is your reward for investing in the shares of a company; the part of the company's profit that comes to you as a part-owner.

Usually, the company would give you a dividend warrant which is like a cheque to have it paid into your bank account.

As a matter of fact, the SEC announced June 2017 as the last day for paper dividend warrants in Nigeria. So, your company should have an E-dividend platform. Companies do not always declare a dividend. Sometimes, they reinvest the profit. But when they do declare a dividend, you are entitled to it as a shareholder. If you were not able to claim your dividend, all hope is not lost except if the dividend was declared over 12 YEARS ago Or you bought the shares ex-div to buy shares ex-div means that you bought the shares after the company's register has closed for the year.

Companies close their shares register at the end of a period after profit has been calculated and the dividend has been declared. For instance, the company may declare a dividend on the 31st of December and close the register on the 15th of January (this is the ex-div/cut-off date). They might also announce that the dividend will be paid on the 28th of February.

If you buy any shares any time after the 15th of January (even if it's before the payment date), you will not get any part of the declared dividend because it will be paid in the name of the shareholder that was on the register as at that date. If you meet both conditions mentioned above, then you have nothing to worry about it.

All you have to do is contact your registrar and they are obligated to resolve the issue or you can log in to the online portal of the SEC

Remember, your unclaimed dividend can be backtracked to 12 years ago. Go and collect your coins. It's yours
