Take a look at all the devices in your life, and which one seems the most resistant to DIY improvements, repairs and useful tweaking? The answer, most likely, is that four-wheeled gadget resting just outside. There are lots of cheap and (mostly) simple ways to get more from your vehicle and make driving and owning it a bit more enjoyable. Today we've rounded up 5 of our favorite car-related tips and tricks that work.

1. Fix cracks and scratches with nail polish:
Nail polish can do many, many things, and its clear variety is no less an amazing solve-all. Need to slow a crack in a windshield or window before you can get to the glass shop? Nail polish has you covered. Got a little ding you want to prevent from rusting? Clear nail polish does the trick. Better still, if you can find a nail polish shade that (closely) matches your car's paint job, it can work as less-expensive touch-up paint, since the two paints are eerily close in nature.

2. Fix dents using hot-water and sink plunge:
If there is a dent on your car, you don't have to drive around town with it. Simply pour some hot water on the surface and use a kitchen sink plunger to pull the body out. It is simple, it works and it saves you money.

3. Use toothbrush and toothpaste to clean your headlights
This one is really easy but requires a little arm strength. Use some toothpaste and rub it all over the plastic cover over your headlights, using a toothbrush. Let it sit for a bit then rinse with clean water and dry. This will remove the foggy glaze that covers them. If you want to keep them that way, try using some furniture polish or car wax to keep them clean.

4. Use Razor blade to remove spots on your windshield
Keep a covered razor blade in your glove compartment for a quick means of dealing with noticeable blotches, and it might just come in handy in other situations, as well.

5. Wrap stockings round your wipers:
All windshield wiper blades get worn out eventually, and if they're damaged enough, they might even fall off. If you're driving through wet weather with an old or missing windshield wiper, the bare metal wiper arm can scratch your window glass. The fix is in a pair of women's stockings. Wrap them tightly around the wiper arm to prevent the metal from scraping the glass. They also work well to clean off debris or smudges until you can get a new set of wiper blades.
