Kanu has argued that since Atiku was born in an area that used to be a part of Cameroon, therefore he is not Nigerian and is working for the interest of the Republic of Cameroon by playing a part in the ceding of the Bakassi peninsula to Cameroon and working against Ekwueme in the first PDP primary.

Nothing is further from the truth and I will prove this by presenting in brief historically verifiable facts and analyze them to conclude that Atiku Abubakar is a bonafide Nigerian and not a Camerounian

GERMAN KAMERUN

Beginning on July 5, 1884, Kamerun was colonized by Germany just as many other African kingdoms. Its capital was at Beau and later Yaounde. Togo initially was a German colony as well.During World War, I, France and Britain became Allies and fought Germany. As a result, the British government invaded Cameroon from Nigeria in 1914 in the Kamerun campaign. They defeated the Germans and the last German fort in the country surrendered to the British in February 1916. After the war, the German colony of Kamerun was partitioned between Britain and France under the June 28, 1919, League of Nations Mandates (Class B). Togo was handed over to the French as well.

FRANCE CAMEROUN

It is noteworthy that although it was the British that invaded Kamerun, it was France who gained the larger geographical share. France transferred the large eastern area of their share called NeuKamerun to their other neighboring French colonies [French Equatorial Africa] and kept the remaining central territory as a French-mandated colony ruling it from Yaoundé as Cameroun.

BRITISH CAMEROONS

The British got by far the smaller share. They got two separate thin strips of land on the eastern border of Nigeria. These two strips were separated by a stretch of land south of the Benoué river, where Nigeria and the new French colony of Cameroun shared a border. These two new territories become known as the British Southern Cameroons and the British Northern Cameroons. Thus a part of British Nothern Cameroon was totally separate from its main part. The new territories were administered by Britain from the colony of Lagos through a resident in Beau.

INDEPENDENT FEDERAL OF NIGERIA AND REPUBLIC OF CAMEROUN

When the Leauge of Nations treaty that partitioned Africa ceased to exist in 1946, most of the mandate territories were reclassified as UN trust territories, and henceforth administered through the UN Trusteeship Council. The object of the trusteeship was to prepare the lands for eventual independence from the Europeans.

Therefore when France Cameroon became the independent Republic of Cameroon in January 1960, the question as to the future of the British Cameroons came up. There were three options. Should they be merged with Nigeria now on the verge of independence or added to the already independent Republic of Cameroun, or should they be granted their own separate country?

ABSORPTION OF THE BRITISH CAMEROONS INTO NIGERIA AND CAMEROUN RESPECTIVELY

Nigeria became independent of Britain in October 1960, and the fate of the British Cameroons was put to a referendum on 11 February 1961.
The Muslim-majority Northern area opted to be merged with Nigeria, while the mainly Christian Southern area voted to join the Republic of Cameroon.

In executing the outcome of the referendum, British Northern Cameroons became the Sardauna Province of Northern Nigeria on 31 May 1961, while British Southern Cameroons dissociated from Nigeria joined the Federal Republic of Cameroon later that same year on 1 October 1961.

15 years later, Gongola State was created on 3 February 1976 from the Adamawa and Sardauna Provinces of North State. After another 15 years, Two new states named Adamawa and Taraba were created out of Gongola state which ceased to exist on 27 August 1991.

CONCLUSION

There is no area in the British Northern Cameroon that was ever a part of the French territory nor the Republic of Cameroun. I was a British territory since 1919, it was administered by a Resident who took orders from the British colonial headquarters in Lagos and it was eventually added to the Federal Republic of Nigeria fifty eight years ago on May 1961 seven months after Nigeria gained independence.

Therefore Atiku Abubakar who was born in Jada, Adamawa is a bona fide Nigerian Citizen and is qualified to run for any office in Nigeria

MATTERS ARISING

As to Atiku working against Ekwuemes ambition as PDP presidential candidate

Has Nnamdi Kanu forgotten that Atiku was the running mate to Obasanjo? How did he expect him to work for Ekwueme A a rival contestant for the same party ticket

This same Atiku was robbed in1993 when MKO Abiola reneged on their agreement to make him his running mate when he stepped down for him in the SDP bye-election. Abiola chose Baba Gana Kingigbe instead of Atiku but you don't hear him whining about how the Yoruba betrayed him.

Accusing Atiku of ceding Bakassi to Cameroun is outright malice.

The summary of the facts is that after British Southern Cameroons voted in 1961 to leave Nigeria and became a part of the Republic of Cameroun, Bakassi remained under Calabar administration in Nigeria. Nigeria and the Republic of Cameroon have disputed the possession of Bakassi for some years, leading to considerable tension between the two countries. In 1981 the two countries were on the brink of war over Bakassi and another area around Lake Chad. Cameroon took the matter to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on 29 March 1994. The ICJ delivered its judgment on 10 October 2002, that sovereignty over Bakassi did indeed rest with Cameroon.
