Why didn’t the oracle tell neo that he was the one?because he wasn’t.

The One was Agent Smith.


this is probably the single most widely misunderstood plot in movie history.

let’s take a look at what we know about The One.

Morpheus tells us The One was:

born inside The Matrix
able to reshape The Matrix at will
prophesied to be reborn in The Matrix
destined to destroy The Matrix and end the war
Neo was born in the real world and plugged into The Matrix, while Agent Smith was born inside The Matrix. Neo is able to bend and break the laws of physics within The Matrix, but only Agent Smith actually changes the landscape and alters reality within The Matrix.


Agent Smith calls The Oracle “mom”, after The Architect tells Neo that The Oracle created The One, and that she would know better than anyone who The One is. of course, she clearly stated that it’s not Neo but he has “the gift” (as many do).

The Oracle tells us that when The One returns to The Source, The Matrix would be shut down. Smith says that he refused to return to The Source when Neo killed him, and he was instead compelled to stay—to disobey. when Neo goes to Machine City—The Source—and plugs in directly, all that happens is that he enters The Matrix, like any other time he plugs in. it isn’t until Agent Smith assimilates him and turns Neo into a Smith clone—thereby unknowingly uploading his own code into a host plugged directly into The Source—that The Matrix is shut down.

it seems pretty explicit to me: Neo is not The one. Agent Smith is.
