The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has declared that the most dangerous drugs circulated in the country are produced in Anambra State. The state NDLEA Commander, Mr. Sule Momodu, who made the declaration on Saturday at the Women’s Development Centre in Awka to mark the 2015 United Nations Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking, identified one of the dangerous drugs produced in the state as methamphetamine Momodu expressed worry over the increasing production of illicit drugs, abuse and trafficking in the state and called for a concerted effort to stop the development. He disclosed that the anti-drug abuse and trafficking agency arrested at least 122 drug suspects between January and June this year. While 114 of them were men, eight were women. A total of 110.624kg of illicit drug, he said, was seized during the period under review with cannabis sativa known as marijuana topping with 107.26kg. Other seizures were cocaine, 138.2 grammes, heroine, 100.54grammes, liquid methamphetamine 2.615kg and solid methamphetamine 510 grammes. The NDLEA commander said the agency also arraigned 22 suspects during the period, out of which eight convictions were obtained while 28 fresh cases were filed. He expressed optimism that the agency would fight drug abuse and trafficking in the state, asking stakeholders to join hands in the campaign against drug abuse. Momodu warned that if the war against illicit drug use and trafficking “is not won now, the scourge will take over the society soonest.” He lauded the state Governor, Willie Obiano, for the support he had given to the agency, especially involving it in the State Security Council and the approval of a parcel of land in Awka, the state capital, for the building of the agency’s rehabilitation centre. Momodu, however, called for the inauguration of the state Drug Control Committee to help drive national drug control plans and objectives. The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jesophat Akabuike, who represented the governor at the event, restated the state’s commitment to the fight against crime in the state, including drug abuse and trafficking. http://www.punchng.com/city-news-feature/most-dangerous-drugs-produced-in-anambra-ndlea/ |
Security agents from the Imo State Police Command have arrested a suspected human trafficker from Abia State. The suspect was arrested on Wednesday, June 24, 2015, through a tip-off members of the public. The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Austin Evbakhavbokun, explained that the arrest of the suspect was sequel to a report that one Miss Ibuchi Okafor (20) had left her home. Okafor, according to Evbakhavbokun, had earlier absconded from her home with her baby and returned without the child, a development that raised suspicion that she sold the baby. Upon interrogation, the state police commissioner, who spoke through his Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem, said Okafor disclosed to the operatives that she was delivered of a baby boy at the home of one Chief Emmanuel Eke of Mbutu, in the Isiala Ngwa South Council area of Abia State. Evbakhavbokun said Eke later revealed that she sold the baby to a yet-to-be identified buyer. He said that operatives of his command stormed the home of Chief Emmanuel Eke where other pregnant ladies believed to be producing babies for sale were arrested. While parading the suspects, the commissioner identified the others as Nkasiobi Uchenna (23), Ella David (24), Blessing Nwabekee, a deaf and dumb, who could not state her age and address and Oluchi Victor (25), who before the arrest, reccruit ladies for Chief Eke. He added that in the course of investigation, Eke confessed to the crime and said that he sold the baby delivered by Okafor to an undisclosed buyer at the cost of N500,000. The police commissioner, however, assured that the suspects would be charged to court for trafficking children as soon as investigations were over. http://www.punchng.com/city-news-feature/operatives-arrest-baby-factory-owner-child-traffickers/ |
Evangelist Elliot Uko is the founder of Igbo Youth Movement and leader South-East Democratic Coalition. In this interview, he speaks on the Buhari Presidency and other national issues. Excerpts: How is the South-East welcoming the new government? We, in the South-East, voted massively for President Jonathan, and our candidate didn’t win. So, normally, adjusting to the reality will take some time. Some clever people will like to exploit the situation to drive their own personal agenda, and cloak it as if it is the South-East agenda, and these are to be expected. The youth wing of Ohanaeze is allegedly giving President Buhari, a list of people to appoint as ministers. Is this a South-East agenda? I am embarrassed by that. The same Ohanaeze youths went to Otuoke to welcome Jonathan the day he returned there. The following week, they issued a statement calling on the Buhari regime to come and collect a list of the PDP South- Easterners who just finished working with Jonathan, who they want him to prosecute. The same Ohanaeze youths called for Uwazurike’s arrest. When I phoned Uwazurike, he said he believed it was the elders that wanted to sacrifice him, and use his blood to endear themselves to Buhari. The same Ohanaeze Youths said that they are now another Ojukwu, to fight Buhari. The same Ohaneze Youths are now giving Buhari, a list of people to employ. It’s obvious they can’t do all these without their elders prodding them, but the desperation to endear themselves to Buhari is embarrassing the entire Igbo nation. Not even Arewa, not the Afenifere, has drawn a list for Buhari. People are wondering why Ohanaeze Youths should be drawing a list of ministers for Buhari. I don’t speak for Ohanaeze. I don’t even know the one which is the right Ohanaeze. There is so much confusion. I’ve stayed away from them for a long time. I’ve not spoken to any of their leaders for more than two years. Do you have faith in President Buhari to rebuild Nigeria? President Buhari has said he is ready to rebuild Nigeria. It is wrong to doubt him. The proper thing to do is to believe him, support him, and pray for him. If he fails, it will not be because we failed to support him. If he treats Ndigbo well, do you think they will swing with the APC? I don’t care about APGA, APC, Labour Party, PDP, whatever, I don’t belong to any one. But I do not think that it’s fair for anybody to expect Ndigbo to now suddenly become the undertakers of the PDP. Some years ago, I was in the sitting-room of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and he asked a top PDP man in the room, ‘Is it true that in the hall where Obasanjo announced that he had chosen Yar’Adua to run for President, that there was no Igbo man there?’ The PDP man said yes, and Ojukwu wept. Ojukwu wept because at that time, the Secretary of PDP was an Igbo man, Ojo Maduekwe. But in the hall where Obasanjo invited other people and announced that he had decided to nominate Umaru Yar’Adua as the President, there was no Igbo man there. It was Ahmadu Ali that picked up the phone and called Ojo Maduekwe to inform him. So the PDP has always excluded Ndigbo, in their arrogance. So, if Ndigbo decide to be undertakers of PDP, so help them God. The political dynamics of Nigeria has never involved Ndigbo, because Ndigbo are upright, sincere, and fair-minded. What Ndigbo want from Nigeria is a just, equitable country that is fair to all. Other people want a Nigeria where they will control and intimidate others. Others want a Nigeria where one of their own will be Head of State. Other people want a Nigeria where Ndigbo will be oppressed and sidelined, so that they will feel that they are the ones in charge, but Ndigbo don’t dream of afflicting anybody. If President Buhari gives Ndigbo a true sense of belonging, do you think Ndigbo will embrace APC? The answer is neither here nor there. What I want President Buhari to know is that if he doesn’t give Ndigbo a sense of belonging, then those elders who told us that he is an Igbo-hater will be correct, will be proven right. If he gives Ndigbo a sense of belonging, by listening to our cry to restructure this country, Ndigbo will finally come to see that he is not the evil as we have been told, and Ndigbo will begin to appreciate him, to work with him, maybe even embrace him. The choice is entirely his. We are a people oppressed and marginalized. We came into Nigeria with all our heart, but some other people convinced themselves that they had to blackmail Ndigbo in order for them to remain relevant. When the FCT was constituted and built, go and check the records, the people that allocated the lands at the FCT made sure that Igbo people got less than 5 per cent of all the allocations. 20 years on, Ndigbo own almost half of Abuja. How? Because they bought from those who got the allocations. Those who got the allocations finally sold their allocations to the Igbo. The degree of envy towards the Igbo man is so frightening. Just look at this. Some people are working hard so that President Buhari will not appoint an Igbo man as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. That is the degree of the hatred towards the Igbo man. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/buhari-adjusting-to-reality-will-take-ndigbo-some-time-uko/ |
Residents of Umuahia, the Abia State capital, have said they face health risk if the growing dumps of refuse in various parts of the city are not immediately evacuated. Southern City News observed that most refuse buckets positioned at strategic locations in the cities had been burnt by residents in their attempt to decongest the overflowing wastes. The sanitary situation in the state, it was gathered, worsened following the failure of the Waste Management Agency to pay workers’ salaries for months. A resident who pleaded anonymity called on government to take urgent steps to remedy the situation to avoid an outbreak of epidemic in the city. He blamed the worsening sanitary situation “on party patronage”, arguing that waste management should be top on the priority list of government. He also said the non-introduction of two systems of refuse disposal contributed to the worsening situation. “The state should introduce degradable and non-degradable items and convert the degradable to manure and with the manure, begin the manufacture of organic fertiliser while the non- degradable should be buried,” he said. Another resident, a housewife said, “Even the Bible says that cleanliness is next to godliness”, wondering why Abia, which prides as the number one state, could not be number one in cleanliness. She said, “I wonder when we degenerated to this level. The stench alone is unbearable. Refuse has almost taken over the roads making it difficult for vehicles to pass. It is really a disaster. “Government should call those who are supposed to evacuate the waste to inject more competent hands if they can no longer do their jobs.” When contacted, the General Manager of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, Mr. Iyke Apugo, said the lack of funds was affecting the operations of the agency. He said the drop in the allocation accruing to the state had badly affected the operations of the agency. Apugo noted that despite the non- availability of funds, employees of the agency had been trying to prevent it from becoming worse. He pleaded with residents to exercise patience as efforts were being made by government to tackle the situation. Apugo said the new government in the state was trying to settle and had not received any allocation, assuring that the situation would soon be addressed. http://www.punchng.com/city-news-feature/refuse-heaps-trigger-fear-in-umuahia/ |

Members of the Abia State House of Assembly have expressed worry over the rising cases of kidnapping in some parts of the state. The legislators, in a resolution on Wednesday, mandated the security agencies in the state to rise up against criminals in the state. They spoke after deliberations on a motion of urgent public attention moved by the Minority Leader of the Assembly, Mr. Abraham Oba. The Abia lawmakers specifically asked the Area Commander of the Nigerian Police Force in charge of Aba to ensure that hoodlums were not allowed to terrorise residents of the commercial town again. They also warned youths in the state against engaging in kidnapping and reminded landlords that the existing laws against kidnapping in the state make owners of any building used for kidnapping to lose such building to the state. For the better part of 2009 and 2010, Abia State witnessed the reign of kidnappers, who almost crippled the economic activities of Aba, the commercial hub of the South-East. Just last Tuesday, gunmen abducted one Mr. Anthony Abomah, employee of an oil servicing company, Saipem Nig Ltd, which is based in the Owaza Community in the Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia. The abductors later demanded N2m ransom. A week before Abomah’s abduction, an employee of Silverbird Television, based in Port Harcourt, was also allegedly shot dead in Aba by unknown gunmen who attempted to abduct her when she visited her parents. A top member of the Aba Sports Club (name withheld) had also been kidnapped in Aba same week as the Silverbird’s employee. There are also increasing cases of car snatching, especially Toyota Camry, in some parts of the state, including Umuahia, the state capital. Worried by the development, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu said he had concluded plans to submit a bill to the state House of Assembly seeking to establish a Security Trust Fund. He said his government would employ modern technology to check crime in the state. Meanwhile, the Abia State Police Command has reiterated its readiness to make the state a hot zone for hoodlums. The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ezekiel Onyeke, in an interview with our correspondent said the command had intensified efforts to combat all forms of crime in the state. He assured residents of their security and asked for cooperation of the members of the public in volunteering information to the police in order to track down criminals. http://www.punchng.com/news/rise-in-kidnap-cases-worries-abia-lawmakers/ |

President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari (retd), will not short-change any section of the country in the distribution of offices, a member of All Progressives Congress, APC, Board of Trustees, Alhaji Gambo Magaji, has said. Magaji, who spoke in an exclusive interview with Vanguard in Abuja, said, however, that while trying to give equal attention to all sections of Nigeria, Buhari would not gloss over the contributions of the zones to his electoral victory. Magaji, who was in the Constitution Drafting Committee of APC during its formative stage, pointed out that it was imperative that the APC government pay attention to the voting pattern in the last election to compensate those who contributed immensely to its success. A document obtained by Vanguard in Abuja, yesterday, showed that the North- West, where Buhari comes from, gave him the highest number of votes with 7,115,199, followed by North-East with 2, 848,678 and the South-West with 2,433,194. North Central took the fourth position with 2,264,355, followed by the South-South, 418,590, and the South-East came last with 198,247 votes. Although Magaji assured that Buhari would turn around the nation’s economy for good and give opportunities for Nigerians to excel, he nonetheless pleaded with Nigerians to give the new President-elect a chance to bring about the needed change. He said: “Before I say anything, I want to appeal to Nigerians that they should give Buhari time because he cannot do everything at a go and he cannot meet all the aspirations and expectations at the same time. “I am saying so because Buhari is inheriting an empty treasury. Secondly, Buhari has come in when the price of oil has gone down, and thirdly, Buhari has come in when a lot of controversies are on, particularly regarding the resources of the country which cannot be accounted for.” Magaji urged Nigerians to give the President-elect time to sort out the leakages in the nation’s revenue sector and look into the issue of the missing $20 billion in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/zoning-buhari-wont-short-change-any-section-but-apc-bot-member/ |
The Chairman of state Presidents of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a socio-cultural organization, in seven Igbo speaking state, Dr. Chris Eluemunoh, on Tuesday warned against any attempt to “further marginalise” the Igbo in Nigeria. Eluemunoh, who spoke with newsmen in Awka, the Anambra State capital, said such attempt would be greeted with a strong move for self-determination by the Igbo. For him, Ndigbo had such concluded on such option, waiting for the “opportune time” to use the joker. He said already, the United Nations had invited some Igbo elders, to hear them out about their demand for a sovereign state for the Igbo in June. He said former National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Dozie Ikedife, would be leading the Igbo delegation to the United Nations in June. Eluomunoh, who was speaking against the backdrop of speculation that the incoming government of President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, might marginalise the Igbo because the people of the South-East voted against him in the just concluded general elections. He said some time last year, the African Union had also granted an Igbo delegation a similar audience in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Ohanaeze boss said the best path the Buhari administration would toe would be to discuss with Igbo leaders on how to chart a viable course for the country. Eluomunoh added, “Buhari must give us one additional state to put us at par with our other brothers. He must also implement the report of the National Conference. If he turns his back to that report, he is turning his back to the unity of Nigeria. If he kills the report, he is killing the unity of Nigeria.” He admitted that the change that came to the country after the last general elections was a welcome development, given the fact that the Peolpes Democratic Party had stayed on the stage for a long time. The Ohanaeze chief opined that there would be no real change in Nigeria if there “is no structural change” in the country. Eluemuno disowned the Chief Ralph Obioha-led Ohanaeze Caretaker Committee, which visited Buhari and canvassed for appointments for the Igbos, dismissing report of any conflict in the organisation http://www.punchng.com/news/ohanaeze-chief-threatens-igbo-will-secede-if-marginalised/?utm_source=Daily+News&utm_medium=twitter |
