Only a census bbasd on state of origin can clearly answer the question of which tribe is the most populous but the most credible census ie the one of 1921 showed that Igbos were the most populous in Southern Nigeria and that with a wide margin. Other indices like WAEC and NECO enrilment, JAMB enrollment and Unity College entrance exams which captures state of origin data show that Igbos who enrol in these are by far more than people of other ethnicities who do.
