Pakistan TV show hosted by Aamir Liaquat Hussain gives away babies to audience

TV host Aamir Liaquat Hussain presented baby girls to two unsuspecting couples during his show, which is broadcast live for seven hours a day during the month of Ramadan.

"I was really shocked at first. I couldn't believe we were being given this baby girl," said Suriya Bilqees, now a mother of a two-week old. "I was extremely happy."

Another baby, a boy, is due to be given to another couple at some point in the coming days.

The show's host has been described as a religious scholar, TV megastar and even a sex symbol. His heady mix of religion and entertainment is often followed by controversy.

"At Christmas there's Santa Claus to give everyone gifts, it's important for Christians. For us Ramadan is a really special time so it's really important to make people happy and reward them," said Hussain.

His show -- Aman Ramazan -- has been dubbed Pakistan's version of The Price Is Right, with members of the 500-strong audience receiving prizes in exchange for answering questions on the Quran.

The giveaway bonanza includes motorbikes, microwave ovens, washing machines and fridges.

He also cooks while men sing Islamic hymns and discusses religion with children in a garden full of rabbits, snakes and goats.

The baby girls given away on the show were found by an NGO, the Chhipa Welfare Association, which says it receives up to 15 abandoned babies a month.

"Our team finds babies abandoned on the street, in garbage bins -- some of them dead, others mauled by animals. So why not ensure the baby is kept alive and gets a good home?" said Ramzan Chhipa, who runs the organization.

"We didn't just give the baby away. We have our own vetting procedure. This couple was already registered with us and had four or five sessions with us."

But, the couple didn't know they would be handed a newborn when they were invited to take part in the show and paperwork was not processed before the live broadcast.

Adoption is not officially recognized in Pakistan and there is no adoption law. The couple will have to apply for guardianship at a family court.

Some viewers praised the show's baby giveaway but others declared it a publicity stunt.

"Pakistan wake up," Shamim Mahmood wrote on the NGO's Facebook page. "Babies are not trophies to be handed to just anyone."

Hussain says it isn't a gimmick to win ratings during the Islamic holy month. He believes his show is unifying a fractured nation, plagued by sectarian violence, religious intolerance and terrorism.

"These are the disenfranchised babies that grow up to be street kids and used for suicide bombing attacks. We have tried to show an alternative," he said.

"Telling people to take these kids off the rubbish on the streets, raise them and make them a responsible citizen, not to destroy society through terrorism," he said.

The show has proved extremely popular, breaking ratings records and may be extended beyond its Ramadan run. He is also planning another program where the audience will be from the minority Hindu, Sikh and Christian communities.

"We've created a symbol of peace and love, that's our show's theme -- to spread love. I'm setting an example. Giving a childless couple an abandoned child," Hussain said.

Two New Studies Discover Reasons Why Humans Are Monogamous

.

A couple hold hands as they walk past a snow-covered segement of the Berlin wall, on December 17, 2010. Scientists are coming closer to understanding the evolutionary reason behind monogamy, with two new studies out on Monday exploring different advantages of the practice that pairs mates for the long haul.
Scientists are coming closer to understanding the evolutionary reason behind monogamy, with two new studies out on Monday exploring different advantages of the practice that pairs mates for the long haul.

A leading theory had been that men stuck around to help raise children -- especially ones, as among humans, who take a long time, and a great deal of energy to rear to adulthood.

But both studies, one in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the other in Science, determined that dads become involved parents later, after they'd already begun being monogamous.

"Paternal care evolves after monogamy is present and seems to be a consequence, rather than a cause, of the evolution of monogamy," said University of Cambridge zoologist Dieter Lukas.

"Once it does evolve," he noted, "it provides a clear benefit to the female."

However, the two teams differed in their conclusions about what brought the males and females to stay together in the first place.

In the PNAS study, the British and New Zealander researchers found the practice of monogamy helped fathers protect their vulnerable young from being murdered by rival males.

According to the researchers, females try to delay having more babies while they're still in the throes of tending to a slowly developing infant. Rival males, then, try to kill the baby to induce the mother to conceive again, with them.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers, from University College London, the University of Manchester, Oxford University, and the University of Auckland, gathered data on some 230 primate species.

They plotted the species on a sort of family tree, reflecting the evolutionary relationship between them.

Through statistical analysis of the tree, the team was able to determine a timeline of which different behaviors evolved together over time, and which appeared first.

According to this timeline, infanticide from rival males drove fathers to stick around to protect their young, leading to the switch from multiple mating partners to just one.

But a second study by University of Cambridge researchers in Science used a different method to come their conclusion that monogamy appeared as a result of competition.

"Where females are widely dispersed, the best strategy for a male is to stick with one female, defend her, and make sure that he sires all her offspring," said Tim Clutton-Brock.

By classifying some 2,500 mammalian species as either solitary, socially monogamous, or group living, they found monogamy tended to appear in species whose food sources were spread out -- like meat and fruits -- where the animal has to range over wide distances to find enough.

These species -- which included several types of rodents, many kinds of primates and some carnivores, including jackals, wolves, and meerkats -- also tended to have low density of females and low levels of home-range overlap.

But unlike in the PNAS study, the University of Cambridge researchers said they did not include humans in their analysis, and they are skeptical their results apply to homo sapiens.

"Humans are such unusual animals, depending so excessively on culture, which changes so many of the ground rules of evolution," Clutton-Brock added during a telephone press conference.

UNBELIEVABLE: Bird Turns Into Woman In Broad Day Light

Things like this were only seen in movies before now, but it happened this morning at Afromedia street in the Okokomaiko area of Lagos. The story behind the bird that changed in this woman is strange:

From what I hear, three (3) birds were flying in the area and suddenly one fell and landed into a water and to the surprise of all around, the bird changed into this woman.

A source told OluFamous.Com the bird-turned-woman was "arrested" by the police where she confessed to be a native of Ikare, a town in Ekiti State.

I wonder how the police is going to handle this case. Strange indeed!

Nick Gilronan, Brooklyn's Smallest Penis Contest Winner, Says He's Proud Of Victory

Nick Gilronan must have big you-know-whats.

The 27-year-old UPS Store worker who won Brooklyn's smallest bpenis contest said he's proud of his puny package.

"The size of a man's penis does not matter for who he is as a person or in a relationship," he told Gothamist after his victory Saturday at Kings County Bar.

Gilronan told the website he wanted to "put on a good show for the audience. Looks like my efforts were successful."

Gilronan's triumph perhaps illustrates that size does indeed matter -- at least, when it comes to self-esteem. - See more at: http://www.multiloaded.com/forum/showtopic.php?id=1479#sthash.bOgA6w1f.dpuf

PoliticsThe 25 Most Failed States On Earth by 500samuel(op): 10:09am On Jul 18, 2013
The 25 Most Failed States On Earth
#1 SOMALIA: This war-torn state has a life expectancy of only 51 and an infant mortality rate of 2 out of 10. It tied for the worst rating on refugees and internally displaced people, human rights, and factionalized elites.

#2 CONGO: With rampant AIDS, malnutrition, pollution, and disease, Congo alone got the worst possible score for demographic pressures. Hundreds of thousands of people are killed each year in internal conflicts, while an estimated 400,000 women are raped every year.

#3 SUDAN: Home to the brutal genocide in Darfur, Sudan got the worst possible scores for refugees, group grievances, factionalized elites, and external intervention.

#4 SOUTH SUDAN: Recently liberated from Sudan, the new country is peppered with unexploded landmines and has trouble with basic vaccinations. With its very existence relying on U.N. support, South Sudan got the worst possible score for foreign intervention — as well as for group grievances and refugees.

#5 CHAD: At just 49.07 years, Chad has the lowest life expectancy in the world. Public infrastructure is almost nonexistent and human rights abuses are rampant. The landlocked country is flanked by instability, with Sudan to the east and the Central African Republic to the south.

#6 YEMEN: The failed state on the Arab Peninsula is one of the poorest countries in the Middle East. Dominated by Islamic extremists, it gets one of the worst scores in security apparatus.

#7 AFGHANISTAN: After U.S.-led regime change and more than a decade of U.N.-led reconstruction, Afghanistan got the worst possible score for foreign intervention. The country has emerged with weak security apparatus and a frail government, among other problems.

#8 HAITI: Things went from bad to worse when this underdeveloped country was rocked by a massive earthquake in 2010. Then, in a cruel twist, a strain of cholera infected 6% of the country, possibly brought by United Nations soldiers responding to the quake. The island nation got terrible marks for foreign intervention and poverty.

#9 CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC: This country has had a series of coups d'etat since gaining independence in 1960. It received abysmal scores for refugees and security apparatus, and bad scores for everything else.

#10 ZIMBABWE: Headed by one of the world's worst dictators, Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe has more than 1 million citizens living with HIV/AIDS. Inflation is so bad, the government considered minting a $100 trillion bill.

#11 IRAQ: Though U.S. forces withdrew in 2011, terrorism and violence in Iraq continued, with hundreds killed so far this year. The Middle Eastern oil power gets the worst possible score for vengeance-seeking group grievance.

#12 COTE D'IVOIRE: The West African country has had two civil wars in the past 11 years, and there are currently thousands of UN peacekeepers and French forces on the ground trying to gain some stability. Côte d'Ivoire gets its worst score for external intervention among many other problems.

#13 PAKISTAN: With monstrous debt, poverty, and rampant Islamic extremism, Pakistan is underdeveloped on multiple fronts. The South Asian country received its worst marks for security apparatus and vengeance-seeking group grievance.

#14 GUINEA: Guinea's worst category is in legitimacy of state after a series of juntas and coups. Major human rights issues include torture by security forces and abuse of women and children through acts like female genital mutilation.

#15 GUINEA BISSAU: More than two thirds of the people in the West African state live on less than $2 a day. The country scores terribly for legitimacy of state and factionalized elites.

#16 NIGERIA: Nigeria is plagued by corruption, poor employment, and terrible infrastructural development.

#17 KENYA: About 50% of the Kenyan population lives below the poverty line and roughly 40% of the nation is unemployed.

#18 NIGER: With more than 7 children born to every woman — a world record — this West African nation suffers extreme demographic pressures. Families struggle to feed and educate children, and it's hard for women to enter the labor force. Public services are abysmal.

#19 ETHIOPIA: When Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993, it rendered Ethiopia completely landlocked. The country with a largely agricultural economy is plagued by drought and famine.

#20 BURUNDI: 85% of the citizens of this tiny African nation live in extreme poverty. Its gross domestic product per capita is a measly $600.

#21 SYRIA: Two years into a civil war that has claimed more than 100,000 lives and has no end in sight, Syria is getting worse and worse. The Middle Eastern country got a near-bottom score for security apparatus.

#22 UGANDA: Uganda's worst tally is from mounting demographic pressures. 6.5% of the adult population has HIV or AIDS.

#23 NORTH KOREA (tie): Called the Hermit Kingdom for its seclusion from the outside world, North Korea got a terrible score for legitimacy of state. Human rights violations are rampant, and aid organizations estimate more then 2 million have died since the mid 1990s over food shortages alone.

#23 LIBERIA (tie): Among the poorest countries in the world, Liberia suffers from a near total lack of infrastructure like clean water, public telephones, or sewage. The West African country also has a huge problem with refugees and internally displaced persons.

#25 ERITREA: A small country in the Horn of Africa, Eritrea has been under dictatorial rule since 1993, when it gained independence from Ethiopia. Eritreans have suffered from military clashes with the Ethiopians and years of failed governance. Eritrea scores worst on human rights, demographic pressures, and legitimacy of state.
