Incessant Strikes May Deny Nigerian Universities Of Global High Ranking - VC by taiwomikeo: 11:17am On Feb 08, 2019
The vice chancellor, Chrisland University, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Prof. Chinedum Babalola, has said tertiary institutions of learning in Nigeria may be denied global high ranking if the trend of incessant strikes by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) continued. Babalola, who expressed the fear during a interaction with newsmen in Osogbo, Osun State, attributed the instability in academic calendar of public universities to the perennial strike by ASUU. She said that though industrial actions had been yielding positive results in some areas, its frequency and long duration, had continued to lower the ranking of Nigerian universities within the global circle. The vice chancellor disclosed that Chrisland University recently made a major breakthrough with the accreditation of nine new programmes by the National Universities Commission (NUC) following their presentation to the commission in October/ November last year. Babalola said that the nine courses accredited by the commission included Accounting, Business Administration, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Microbiology, Economics, Criminology and Security Studies, Political Science and Psychology. She lauded the chancellor of the university, Mrs. Winnifred Awosika, the pro chancellor and chairman of council, Emeritus Professor Bayo Adekanye, council members, members of the Board of Trustees, principal officers, the school management, as well as staff and students for their immense contributions to the success of the exercise. Babalola who disclosed that admission to Chrisland University for the 2018/2019 session is still ongoing, called on applicants to use the opportunity to apply for courses of their choice.
