Dear Entrepreneur,

Registering your business is not mandatory but there are several reasons why it would be beneficial for you to do so e.g

-Ability to open a Corporate Account.
-Customers/Clients take you more serious if your Company is registered
-Banks only grant business loans to registered businesses
-Your Company becomes your brand
-Investors are more comfortable with a registered business.

You can decide to register a Business Name (popularly referred to as enterprise or ventures) or incorporate a Limited Liability Company (LLC).
The choice depends on the type of business you run, how many owners it would have, and your financial situation. No one choice suits every business

Your initial choice of a business structure isn’t set in stone. You can start out as a Business Name and if your business grows or the risk of personal liability increases, you can convert your business to a Limited Liability Company.

Recent Reforms
The Government recently introduced reforms aimed at making company registration easier and these include:

-It now takes 48 hours to register a business entity in Nigeria from when the application form is completed and all required documents available
-It is now possible to conduct an online search on Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) portal.
-The new regulations made it optional for applicants to hire lawyers to prepare registration documents.
-The new regulations introduced single incorporation form (CAC 1.1) to save time and reduce costs.
-You can now submit completed business registration documents on the portal and physical submission no longer allowed.
-The Corporate Affairs Portal has now integrated the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) e-payment solution to enable e-stamping.
