Short Story: Valentine Needs No Roses by Charlesdonald(m): 11:28am On Feb 11, 2019
She is in her room; right in front of the standing mirror, dressed and wearing a make up. After wearing a cologne that’s enticing too, she receives a phone call. Her fiance is outside in his car waiting, she rushed things up, then she was with him in his car.

They drove to a destination quite romantic, few people were there, lovers actually. They were at their table and an attendant came to attend to their needs.

He stares at her and says he is lucky to have her.
She smiles.

Then he brings out a Rose packed in a designed little box, it smelled beautiful just like her. He opened it and reach out the Rose to her, she held it and there was a little cut in her palm afterwards,
Tensed,
Both of them
Blood dripped.

He used a little towel to help clean it up, it gushes it out the more. Then the blood became more redder than normal, then it turned pink.
Yellow,
Brown,
Black.

They became scared.
As it continues to change color, then it settled for Purple. Awkward, she cries out.
What’s happening to her?
Eyes were focused at them.
He then suggested that they get to the hospital, Just when he stood up, she fainted.

Same thing started happening everywhere. Every person holding a Rose for more than 15seconds1, Male or female gets worked up by the same process and could as well infect anybody close to them. And the penalty for this infection is death after three hours.

This Valentine seems to be cursed, He helped to wake her up. Then he got infected too and fainted.

The attendant who cleaned their table had also touched the Rose, She had fainted in the kitchen.
Someone helped her out and also got infected.
It began to spread like the whirlwind and wildfire.
Nobody knows the cause of what is happening.
The environment begins to panic.

Valentine had brought a pandemic upon them. Pandemonium all around the city. Social media is ablaze, Videos of it on Instagram, Retweets of it on Twitter, Trending the most on face book and on the medical facilities, Medical practitioners are afraid to carry out research’s.

Nobody wants to be infected, Hospitals are closed down, the street is getting to be filled up with dead bodies, the beach as well, Shop rites, Tantalize, Fun park, Sport centers, Cinemas, Church, Mosques, Nowhere is a safe Harbour, Even those behind closed doors gets them infected.

More like airbounre disease, Outrageous and disastrous.

He had woke up from his faint and to his surprise, Everywhere seemed impossible, His girl is far away.

Could it be end time, He thought. Millions of phone calls and text.

He got to his car, Felt weak to drive then he managed. Upon driving and listening to the radio.
While trying to maneovre his car from stomping on dead bodies, The OAP talked about the infection killing after three hours. He stepped on his brake and the tyre screeches.
What!
Out of fear, he spoke
He has just two hours left before he dies. What’s going to happen? He is a fighter and must survive this, Just like the time of the old.

He considers himself a hero, His sister had been murdered on Valentines day Last year.

Her boyfriend was responsible but he did a good job torturing him. He made him feel haunted while he was in the lurk. He pasted photos of his late sister on his car wind screen, Painting his car red and leaving a note always stating “Murderer”.
Going over to his residence and doing same secretly. Hacking his account and tarnishing his image and reputation. He did everything possible to ruin him, Till he could gather enough evidence and send him to jail.

His sister found out her boyfriend had another lover On valentine’s day, He had bought A Rose by the road side and they drove to a destination, She was happy an glad

Her man loves her, She never knew It was not for her. She had being a second fiddle to get someone out of his head. She was to be ridiculed at the rendezvous. They joined an elegant lady at a table. After some moment, She happened to know she was a third wheel.
Never to cause a commotion then she comported herself.

Hell only break loose the moment her supposed boyfriend gave his true love The rose they had bought before getting they. She felt traumatized and Walked out in anger. She couldn’t control the flow of tears, Her boyfriend followed her
She knew how to drive.
She was with his car key
She drove some length to a deserted area.
He pursued her there with a bicycle he could find hanging around.
Out of vexation they exchanged heated words and he hit her, She fought back and he jacked her up and slammed her to the ground, She passed out.

He Didn’t care, he puts the bicycle in his car and drove off.
While she was in pain, blood spilt from her head and an elderly woman, Extremely old, happened to pass by selling Purples Hibiscus flowers. She shaked her head, Called her my child “l know what you want, spill it out” Tears made her eyes shiny in death.

Then she cursed.
“Valentine needs no Roses”—For every Valentine after my death, Roses shall be a curse upon lovers and all shall be infected by whatever doom it brings them within a space of three hours”
The old lady smiled.
Then she smiled back in death.
Their only remedy and solution would be a garden of “Purple hibiscus”
Damn!
The old lady vanishes into the thin air .
She calls her brother and passed away.

Back to his senses now,
He gets the whole message, What the city needs is Purples Hibiscus garden to survive every Valentine.
How is he going to find one? Purples Hibiscus garden are rare. He needs to spread the message.
The street is dry, Nobody is nowhere and the curse have taken half the city. He reaches out to a friend who is a media strategist but his friend wouldn’t allow him in because of the fear of getting infected.

He pleaded that he had a solution and he needs his help to get it known to the public.
Interested!
His friend seem like it he open the door of his home for him, He too got infected and fainted, Woke up after awhile and one hour was left for him as he explained to his friend.

His friend used his media connection to tell what could be then possible solution and another trend for survivors began On social media #FindAHibiscusGarden.
It spread like the wind. Some doubted the solution, Others gave up and some strived to survive.

What a valentine.
Finally it was announced. A very large garden of Hibiscus has been found.
He gave up as well, The distance to get there is killing. His friend gave him a pep talk that he must survive.

They got in his car and above the speed limit he drove.
It’s either they die by accident or the curse
Planes were in the sky, Helicopters, Ship on sea and all things for transportation was used.
All roads lead to the “Purples Hibiscus Garden”.
Some died on the way, Other involved in accidents and all.
Finally they got there, An old lady owned the garden. The serenity was calm with people looking distraughted.

After a while people who were three hours to dying didn’t die, glad they made it.
Then he searched for his girl, lucky he found her.
They were in tears, twinkles in their eyes
Then he plucked a Purples Hibiscus and gave it to her. His love for her this Valentine doesn’t need a red Rose.
They kissed.
