The introduction of VAR to the Champions League knockout phase was meant to ensure that all goals scored are legal. However in the match between Ajax and Real Madrid yesterday, VAR generated another round of controversy after Nicolas Tagliofico’s goal was ruled out for offside.
After letting the goal stand initially, as play was about to continue, referee Szymon Marciniak was instructed to watch the replay again, and after a few seconds, he disallowed the goal.
