Tuesday August 24 , 2010 Robbers kill 5 cops in Abia •Cart away 5 rifles From LAMBERT TYEM, Abuja Wednesday, August 25 , 2010 Five policemen, including an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), were on Monday killed by 10 suspected armed robbers in Obingwa Local Government Area, Abia State. The cops, according to police sources, were ambushed by the gunmen while returning from patrol to their base at Akpa Ngwa. It was, however, not confirmed at the time of filing this report whether any arrest had been made over the incident, but the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer (DFPRO), Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Yemi Ajayi expressed the belief that the Abia State Command would leave no stone unturned to fish out the perpetrators the dastardly act. Daily Sun gathered at the force headquarters in Abuja that the robbers, after killing the policemen in their patrol van, made away with all their AK 47 rifles and other belongings. The incident which, according to police sources, happened at about 7. 45 pm on Monday, was among many that had left over 100 policemen dead this year in the South-east geopolitical zone. The police sources also dislosed further reports indicated so far that over 700 policemen had lost their lives in similar incidents this year, lamenting the high death rate among members of the force.
