Banks borrowings from the Central Bank of Nigeria through the Standing Lending Facility increased last week as traders say they expect liquidity to spur this week on the back of N578.98 billion worth of Open Market Operation (OMO) bills that will mature into the system.

As against N717.55 billion that banks borrowed through the SLF window penultimate week, borrowings rose by 70 per cent to N1.217 trillion last week. The highest amount for the week had been taken on Tuesday when banks took N357.626 billion from the CBN. This brings the amount commercial banks have borrowed from the CBN SLF window this month to N2.11 trillion while deposits to the CBN stood at N426.22 billion.

Deposits through the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) dropped from N146.45 billion the prior week to N129 billion. Liquidity which had remained tight at the beginning of last week however eased up on payment of Open Market (OMO) and primary market maturities. System liquidity had improved by Friday due to maturities as there had been repayment of N800.89 billion worth of OMO and N153.384 billion worth of Primary Market bills on Thursday.
