It's no news that earlier today President Buhari ordered security agents to shoot and kill any body trying to snatch ballot Boxes , this statement from the president has been received with mixed feeling with some Nigerians ignorantly supporting the president and many condemning the statement as one unbecoming of a democratic leader in a democracy citing that the statement could be a catalyst for gross human right violation and mass disenfranchisement of valid voter and they may not be far from the truth.

I have taken the liberty to outline below how this statement might lead to human rights abuse :

1 : Valid voters in areas where Buhari is not popular like southern Kaduna and middle belt might be at risk of being deliberately wrongly labelled Ballot Snatchers and military might used to intimidate them into not voting .

2: The statement could encourage low voter turnout as no sane person wants to be around a polling booth where assault rifle can be fired by trigger happy military men on the strength of Buharis unfortunate statement.

3: It could be used to scuttle polling booths Buhari is already losing as partisan military men can open fire and disrupt the voting process citing the presence of imaginary ballot snatchers .

4: Crooked security personnel could use it as an avenue to score personal vendetta where the can kill a perceived enemy unprovoked and claim ballot box snatching .

5 : Can be used to intimidate opposition party agents who might just be labelled Snatchers and killed or chased away to create room for manipulation of the polling booth final result sheet.

6 : Can be used to assassinate fellow politicians during the poll and just simply label them box snatchers.


From the 6 points above I am sure you all agree with that Buhari statement has done more damage than good to the electoral process .

I mentioned this in an earlier comment, Buhari has just given security operatives excuse to justify extra judicial killings and voter intimidation during elections.
