Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is a technology that that helps to bring fairness and truth to bear. In whatever way you may think of it, and how it has greatly influence football decision so far and it is becoming a force to be reckoned with. Many players, coaches, officials, administrators inter alia have given their divergent opinions as regards VAR.

Before now, there were only need for linesmen (both on the other side of the pitch), and the fourth official, whom the central referee seek his opinion on issues during the game. FIFA President Gianni Infantino on official approval of the system said that; “This topic was discussed and debated for decades. VAR is good for football and good for refereeing, it brings more fairness in the game and, for these reasons, we have decided to approve VAR.” Truly, football has had it challenges of getting justice to the teams that deserve it and probably meting out punishment to the other team or player who is found wanting in this regard.

It would have been superb if a player commits a foul and admits to such act; sometimes you will be baffled to watch a player commit a cynical challenge and want to prove that he did not. With VAR the truth will come to the fore. Granted that it may slow than the pace or tempo of the game, but you will have to admit that it is worse if you cannot get to see justice given to the team that deserves it.

Just think of Maradonna’s ‘Hand of God’ goal against England in the 1986 World Cup which up to this moment is seen as a pain in the neck for most football lovers. Do you recall Thierry Henry’s handball which deliberately allowed France to progress to the 2010 World Cup tournament, at the detriment of opponents Republic of Ireland? There are more of these avoidable cases in football if there was VAR back then or were used. No system is absolutely perfect. Let's hope VAR will be the best for football in the future. Accept it!
