THE Akwa Ibom State Government has raised alarm over what it described as "high level desperation by the opposition group" in the state to bring the state governor, Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio, at logger heads with prominent indigenes of the state and the presidency.

The government said the governor’s phone number 08075707070, was being used through cloning, to send text messages that they have been sent by the state governor to either assassinate or kidnap them.

The move, government said, is "intended to create fear among the people and paint a picture of insecurity in the state as we move closer to 2011, which is the election year.

"They have tried all other antics and it has refused to work for them and that is why they have decided to go a step further in their insatiable wish to discredit the governor by cloning his mobile telephone line and using it to send text messages purportedly from the governor.

According to the commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, "we also have it on good authority that they are planning to use that same number to send anti- presidency messages around the nation in-order to paint the governor as anti establishment governor, which is far from the truth. That is why we are alerting the public on the plans."

"Having failed in their numerous attempts to paint the Godswill Akpabio-led administration in bad light, the opposition have gone into the criminal act of cloning the governor’s telephone number 08075707070, which they have been using to send death threats and kidnap messages to prominent indigenes of the state in order to give the impression that Governor Akpabio was behind the spate of kidnapping and politically motivated assassinations in the state".
