Programming skills
A good understanding of some programming language used in AI like R, python, C++ will be helpful to machine learning engineer. A machine learning engineer must understand the various programming language paradigm such as oop and how it appeals to various project. Popular libraries are based on either or combination of these languages.

Mathematical skills
Another important skill every machine learning engineer must have is good knowledge of linear algebra and statistics, as this is needed in order to successfully create a functional model. A good understanding of the underlying mathematical principle guiding each algorithms will help ML engineer in selecting the right algorithm for specific problems. Understanding of neural networks
Neural network can be useful for solving very complex problems and as such, a good machine learning engineering must understand the underlying architecture of neural networks.

Be updated
A good machine learning engineer must stay updated on various improvement and update in the field of ML, through reading research papers and by being part of various communities and forum built to discuss AI and machine learning.

Good communication skills
As a machine learning engineer you must a have a good communication skill in order to effectively collaborate with both technical and non-technical people to discuss the project.
