THE PLACE OF NURTURE IN THE BEHAVIOUR AND CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIVIDUALS by BLUEMAN

According to concise OXFORD dictionary, NURTURE is the upbringing, education, and environment for influencing or determining personalities (behaviour and characteristics).

BEHAVIOUR is the way an individual responds to stimulus or situation.

CHARACTERISTIC is a feature typical of a person.

Yet, these behaviour and characteristics of individuals is not in a form of 100% banked on the environment (nurture) alone; whilst nurture has more vital role to play in this regard; nature (heredity) is its side-kick.

NATURE is the "basic" or inborn features, qualities, or character of an individual based on genetic predispositions and refers to physical and personality traits determined by a person’s genes which cannot be changed...for now.

First point to note is that a profound scholar, John Locke, in the year 1690 maintained a view that humans acquire all or almost all their behavioral traits from "nurture". He termed the view as "tabula rasa" which means "blank slate".

This shows that a person’s environment affects the way he/she thinks, learn language, acquire knowledge, choose sexual partners, and make moral judgments after birth. Logically, nurture not only takes strong hold after birth, but right from the embryonic stage of the pre-natal stages which is where conception begins. Ethe, N. and Edougha, D.E. (2016) defines nurture as the immediate surroundings where growth and development take place from conception till death.

An individual's behavior is as a result of environmental influences. The influences one surround him/herself with is how they conduct themselves for every individuals are influenced by other humans. One's behavior is determined by who they want to be like and look up too and that has nothing to do with the genes. A human’s behavior is by choice not inherited.

Generally, the behaviour of an individual is brewed directly from this individual's environment; concurrently, the "characteristics" of this same (or every other) individual is shared between nurture and nature. At a glance, nature would "seem" to have an upperhand here since the features (characteristics) of a child at birth is gotten from either or both of its birth parents right from conception. At the end, nurture takes the rein and rides. As the child grows to adulthood, he/she creates his/her own characteristics (especially when rebellious) making the characteristics previously harnessed to be a borrowed one. For example, Micheal Jackson, Bob Risky, Denrele, Kylie/Catherine Jenner, Homos, Tomboys, etc. got their characteristics from nurture.

Even Mr. Falana, popularly known as Falz - the bahd guy and his siblings all decided to go to the BAR due to the nurture from their parents who were deeply rooted lawyers before they were married. Imagine Falz as your brother or your course mate...it's either he is a GHANA BURGER or no different from who you are, who you were, or what you are striving to be. Falz environment got him to the limelight he his experiencing.

In fact, practically looking at me, I'm already subdued by nurture. What's left of me from nature is just my bow-leg and height. I'm just waiting for a nudge to go ahead with the changes.

As an aside, even if it is a fact, victimised ladies should stop stressing that "it's in Men's nature to cheat". Yeah! We were born that way, but that's why nurture exists. It then depends if the individual is a MERLIN or a MORGANA.

Parents (whether adopted parents, school parents, mummy and daddy G.Os., or blood parents) are the major players of this NURTURE phenomenon. Whether positively or negatively, nurture comes to the scene to take dominance making the child either a listener or a rebellious one.

RELIGIOUSLY, the environment Adam's wife, Eve found herself made her labour in pain before giving birth; besides, Adam nor Eve were homosexuals.
Nature and Nurture is just like John the Baptist and Jesus Christ - Nature sets the pace then Nurture takes over.
In Proverbs 29:17: "Discipline your son and you can always be proud of him. He will never give you reason to be ashamed." There is nurture at work.

Going outside the box of the place of nurture in the behaviour and characteristics of individual and after taking critical research, there is a level ground that NURTURE IS NATURE and vice versa. Nurture and nature are hopelessly interwoven with one another making each word synonyms or a part of evolution intrapersonally. Nurture and Nature is an example of intrapersonal and interpersonal entity respectively. Genes have an influence on the environments we experience. At the same time, a person’s environment and experience can directly change the level at which certain genes are expressed which in turn alters both the physical structure and activity of the brain. Given this modern understanding switch, the issue of nurture's place in the behaviour and characteristics of every individual ceases to make sense in many ways since genetics or other natural influences are mostly, if not all, responsible for the characteristics pertaining to the personality, behavior and intelligence of an individual and the main contribution to how a person develops is made by the influence of the people and events that interact with that person throughout their life.

Variation is the raw material of evolution. Natural selection and other mechanisms of evolution work on the variation within a population — so without
variation, there would be no evolution. However,
there are two possible sources of variation: the
environment and genes — in other words, nature and nurture. To understand these two components,
imagine a field of corn plants with varying heights. If
the variation in height were entirely environmental in
origin (e.g., due to quality of soil, amount of sunlight,
temperature, etc. — the "nurture" end of the
spectrum), tall parents wouldn't sire particularly tall offspring and siblings wouldn't necessarily resemble
each other in height, since height would only be
affected by the environment and not by which gene
versions the offspring carry. On the other hand, if the
variation in height were entirely genetic in origin (the
"nature" end of the spectrum), then every plant's height would reflect the genes it inherited from its
parents and nothing else — no matter how much or
little you watered a particular plant, it would grow to
the same height. Since only those traits with some
genetic basis can be inherited by offspring (a key
component of evolution), only genetically-based traits can evolve.
