The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), in collaboration with the Bayero University Teaching Hospital, Kano and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has successfully conducted a kidney transplant on a 31-year old Suleiman Usman. The kidney was donated by his brother, Abubakar Usman at the university’s Kidney Centre.

According to the university’s authorities, the transplant was the first of its kind handled in the institution without the assistance of any foreign surgeons, since the Kidney Centre was established in 1993.

Announcing the successful transplant yesterday at a press briefing at the teaching hospital, the Chief Medical Director of UMTH, Prof. Othman Kyari, said “first ever in the history of Maiduguri Kidney Centre, a team of doctors and surgeons from this hospital and others from Ile-Ife and Kano performed a very successful kidney transplant on Suleiman Usman without the intervention of any foreign doctors and surgeons.

He said with the successful transplant, there will be no more need to send kidney patients for transplant in foreign countries.

The chief medical director also noted that besides overcoming the challenges of transplanting the kidney, the exercise was carried out at the total cost of N2 million, stating that if it were carried out in any of the foreign countries, it would have cost the hospital about N3.5 million.

According to Prof. A. Akinsola of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), once the kidney is successfully transplanted, normal function returns and the quality of life of the patient is normalised.

He said except for the side effects of immunosuppressive drugs and acute rejection episodes in non-compliant or poorly matched patients, the donor’s transplanted kidney would start functioning to continue with normal life.

On the prevention of kidney damages and the diseases associated with kidneys, he said: “Prevention is the best solution to kidney diseases by changing people’s life styles against excessive drinking, smoking and lack of exercises and other activities that could keep people physically fit.”

He said because many people are addicted to these life styles, there are already 60 million people suffering from kidney related diseases in the country.

Prof. Kyari further disclosed that 10 per cent of the kidney patients at the UMTH are of renal disease, while 16 are affected with various ailments of the kidney.

He said with the successful transplant of the kidney on Suleiman, the next transplant by the hospital’s team of doctors and surgeons would take place in the next three weeks.

Akinsola appealed to wealthy individuals and philanthropists to sustain the transplant of kidneys at the teaching hospitals, while the Federal Government is to reduce tariffs on imported drugs and encourage the local production of such drugs in the country to save foreign exchange.

I've never doubted the indomitable spirit of Nigerians whenever they put their minds to anything. They are sure of succeeding in spite of the odds they face on a daily basis. I know there have been other medical feats that have not been reported by the media, but at least this achievement made it to Nairaland. Lets Celebrate cool cool cool cool cool

Dear All,

St. Nicholas Hospital has done nearly 100 kidney transplants in the last 10 years, majority of which did not require foreign assistance. Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital has done about 25 kidney transplants; Aminu Kano University Teaching Hospital has done about 10 kidney transplants and University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital has done one.

Majority of the above were done wholly by Nigerians. The article states that its the first in the history of the Maiduguri Kidney Centre since it was established in 1993.

It is our sincere hope that more institutions can carry out this necessary procedure to give more people a second chance at life. Right now, it is estimated that 15, 000 new cases of kidney failure requiring kidney transplants are diagnosed annually in Nigeria.

It is expensive to manage because the patient still needs life long medication to prevent rejection of the new kidney. Presently it costs about N150, 000 per month. How many Nigerians can afford that and the millions of Naira necessary to do the kidney transplants in the first place.

What about kidney donors? It is wrong to buy a kidney because one would be commercially exploited and soon a black market will exist for these organs. Donating a kidney is usually from a relative where one can be sure it is altruistic. If a friend wants to donate, he/she would be screened to make sure there is no money involved.

Prevention is better than cure. The most common causes of Kidney failure is Hypertension and Diabetes; know today if you fall into either category and begin to manage it now. There are other causes of kidney failure.

See the following for further information:
1. Be informed about kidney failure: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-470563.0.html
2. The Guardian newspaper on Thursdays: Kidney Knowledge Series

You can also do a simple urinalysis to know the state of your kidneys. If the result comes back that you have protein within it, you should see a doctor for further tests.

Are your kidneys OK?

This chain email made the rounds in Nigeria a couple of weeks back. You will find it useful to look after your kidney.

10 Tips to prevent kidney failure

A Facebook friend in Benin this week appealed to friends to pray for a relative who has come down with a kidney problem. Have you noticed a steady rise in the incidence of kidney failures in Nigeria in the past few years? In fact, medical experts revealed in May that more people die every day from kidney related diseases than malaria and HIV/AIDS in Nigeria today.

To make matters worse, treatment of this condition is extremely expensive in Nigeria, especially as sufferers have to undergo expensive dialysis up to three times a week, each session costing between N35k and N65k. The public hospitals which are more easily accessible and affordable to the general public lack the requisite equipment. It’s only of late that a few public-spirited organisations such as the MTN Foundation are donating dialysis centres to some of these public hospitals.

In a situation like this, the best service anyone can render to himself therefore is to specially look after his/her kidney. You would find the following 10 tips most useful:

1.    Watch the drugs you take.

There are so many fake drugs in Nigeria today. If it is not prescribed or absolutely necessary, avoid taking drugs. In November 2008, 34 Nigerian children died and more than 50 others were hospitalised with severe kidney damage after taking the drug My Pickin. Many of them might have been given the drug not because they were sick, but because they were crying (possibly due to minor discomfort, such as from wet nappies!), or because their mothers wanted to prevent teething problems. Without that adulterated drug, those kids would be alive today. Mind you, drugs include the various concoctions masqueraded as herbal medicine. Beware of anything you do not know its full constituents.

2.    Regularly check your Blood Pressure.

High BP destroys the kidney. Funny thing is that you may not notice when your BP is in dangerous zone, unless you check.

3.    Stay properly hydrated by drinking water.

If your urine is constantly concentrated (looking too yellowish), you are straining your kidneys. Drink water.

4.   Control your Blood Sugar Levels

If you are a diabetic, properly control your blood sugar levels. If you are not, but have a family history of it, then regularly go for checkups to be sure you are safe.

5.    Watch alcohol intake

Including alcohol in disguise (sold as remedies for pile, malarial fever, etc,) e.g. Opa eyin, Ale, Afato, etc.

6.    Quit smoking

Cigarette smoke causes a variety of health problems that can increase your chance of kidney failure. If you stop smoking, it will also lower your blood pressure, which is important for preventing kidney failure.

7.    Maintain healthy eating habits

8.   Exercise regularly

9.    Get enough sleep

10. Get help

At the first sign of a problem, get help. Get proper and regular dialysis. Yes, it is expensive, but the alternative is death.

Keep well. Send this mail to people you care about. Let’s check the scourge.

Good news.

However, the first ever kidney transplant in the world was performed in the US in 1950. 60 years ago. If the kidney centre, which was established in 1993, is just making the first success of it without the help of foreigners, it is not so encouraging. I dont however believe that it is the fault of the people. I think it is the fact that there are NO PROPER FACILITIES available for these types of operations.

That said, i can swear that there are Nigerian doctors and specialists around the world handling more complicated procedures daily.

Wow!  It doesn't matter how long it takes.  A hen hutches from the egg almost walking, but it might never fly successfully.
Even though a crane's chick takes time to train to fly, it finally does really well.  I believe that is a great achievement, and we are yet to witness better things to come.  Where did India begin?  Kudos

We definitely have the talent in this nation to be astounding but for the many obstacles we suffer from. It's good to see this feat achieved on our soil but we have to take giant strides to keep these acts going and possibly improve on them.
