There indications that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is tracking transactions on bank accounts of various states to prevent outgoing governors from stealing public funds.

Bank accounts of many states, including that of Imo, Kano, Kwara, Lagos and others, might have been placed under the special watch.

The step by the EFCC was informed by intelligence report about suspicious financial activities by top officials of the concerned states.

The development came almost a week after the Imo State acting Accountant-General, Mr Uzoho Casmir, was arrested for allegedly withdrawing N1.050bn from the state coffers for vote-buying on the instruction of Governor Rochas Okorocha.

Uzoho’s arrest on Thursday last week followed intelligence report that the governor allegedly intended to use the money for vote-buying in favour of his preferred candidate in the March 16 governorship elections.

The EFCC was also said to have exposed about N1bn cash withdrawal by the Kwara State Government, a week before the February 23 presidential and National Assembly elections.

Investigations by the EFCC operatives revealed that the money was withdrawn from the state’s account domiciled with Sterling Bank.

A source from the anti-graft agency explained that, “Following intelligence reports that some state governments were looting public funds to induce voters during the elections, the EFCC set up a special team which has successfully tracked the financial improprieties by Imo, Kano and Kwara states.”

“The agency is also monitoring the accounts of many other states to prevent suspicious withdrawals and transactions.”

The acting EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade, refused to deny or confirm the surveillance on the bank accounts of state governments as he simply said that part of the responsibility of the Commission was to prevent corruption.

He said, “Whether somebody is leaving office or not is not the reason we are investigating, we have the mandate and by virtue of a Supreme Court pronouncement, anyone can be investigated.

“Immunity precludes some people from being prosecuted and these are the President, Vice President, the governors and their deputies. So, whether you are leaving office after a second term or not, it does not stop ongoing investigation activities.”

In a related development, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) had raised the alarm over alleged looting of the Kano State treasury following the reported withdrawal of N223m from the state coffers.

A voucher, reportedly from Unity Bank dated March 12, 2019, gave the breakdown of the cash transfer to 13 local government areas. The state government had claimed the money was meant for vote-buying during the forthcoming supplementary elections in the council areas, stating that it was their statutory allocation.

The CUPP had again accused Bauchi and Adamawa states of withdrawing millions of naira for use during the supplementary polls.

Oyo State governor-elect, Mr Seyi Makinde, had also on Tuesday raised the alarm that the state government had been moving money from the state coffers few days after the governorship poll which the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) lost.

Makinde, who won as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alleged that credible sources informed him that contracts were being used to move the money in connivance with a few civil servants and warned that he might be forced to launch a probe, if the aim of the contracts was to deplete the state’s treasury.

In the same vein, the winner of the Imo State governorship poll, Emeka Ihedioha, advised financial institutions to halt new transactions with the state government or do so at their own peril.

Speaking with journalists in Owerri on Thursday, Ihedioha said new transactions could promote illegal activities and destabilise the state’s finance.

If EFCC can be true to themselves, they should deploy all the necessary gadgets to track Ganduje of Kano and Rochas Okorocha.

They have some evil plans.

I'm a little bit impressed with EFCC because they listed Kano as one of the states, because we all know they work as if they're an agency under APC as a party. If Ganduje finally loses this election and they don't pick him up by May 30th, then I'll know this is just a tongue-in-cheek statement. We can easily say they arrested Imo accountant general because the money would have been been used to fund another party, AA, instead of the APC they know. grin

cool

EFCC been proactive .

Since the global financial intelligence unit was domiciled with EFCC rather than CBN, All bank transaction local and international, all moneygram westerunion and similar transaction and all MasterCard and Visa card transaction of all Nigerian poor or rich is on EFCC radar without the need to go to any court to request a warrant.

They even gave bureau de change strong directive of informing and revealing the identity of who ever comes to change foreign currency of some certain amount to EFCC.

Bottomline is many yahoo guys, ritualist drugdealer people with unexplainable income would be caught in Buhari's trap setup for opposition

I am sure Imo state will be there. Okoroawusa has moved about 17billion in the past one week. Okoroawusa failed woefully as governor and wasted 8yrs doing nothing only to incur massive debt. Okoroawusa has made Imo state useless, hopeless and worthless. He wanted to use his house boy to cover up his loots but he failed woefully when PDP defeated him and his house boy despite wasting billions of naira buying votes. Okoroawusa paid 70% salary to civil servants for 4yrs and owed pensioners for 8yrs but he is ready to waste billions of naira to voting buying.

Okoroawusa is a candidate of Kuje or kirikiri.

This is not fighting corruption. To fight corruption, start from well-known corrupt people. Start from Buhari, Obasanjo, Atiku, Okorocha, Orji Uzo Kalu, Adams, Tinubu, Amaechi. Redesign our fiscal and monetary policies to control inflation, vices and brigde a little gap between the rich and poor.
.
In fact, be demonstrative and start from APC. This will instill more fear to the party counterparts involved in one corrupt allegations or the other.
.
Well, it is unfortunate you cannot fight yourself.
