$157,000 Raised on GoFundMe to help migrant 8-Year-Old Nigeriian chess champ !! by chessguru(m): 3:14pm On Mar 19, 2019
Last week , the story of a young Nigerian Boy who is very talented at the game of chess hit Nairaland front page , his family was said to have fled from Boko Haram in Nigeria and now seeking asylum in the United state of America while presently homeless , the boys talent is making a way for his family , while many on Nairaland focused only on the negative Boko Haram story , well meaning people mostly foreigners focused on the positive side which is the talent of the boy and as we speak are donating almost every minute to assist the young boy because of his talent !! more than # 50 million naira has been raised for the boy in 3 days !! and we are still counting. grin grin Guys lets focus on the positive and less on the negative , the better for us and our Family and maybe Nigeria as a whole.
As at the time of making this post $ 157,534 has been raised by far exceeding the original goal withing a period of just three days with donors still making more donations daily.
Tani's Family is over there in the United States trying to make a living and the talent of their child which is Chess is making a way for them. Tani is presently preparing fort Elementary National championship in May , 2019 .
Tani tries to put that out of his mind. He lies on the floor of the shelter and practices chess for hours each evening — now preparing for the elementary national championship in May.

“He is so driven,” said his school chess teacher, Shawn Martinez. “He does 10 times more chess puzzles than the average kid. He just wants to be better.”

Makofsky shook his head wonderingly. “One year to get to this level, to climb a mountain and be the best of the best, without family resources,” he said. “I’ve never seen it.”

Tani is a reminder that refugees enrich this nation — and that talent is universal, even if opportunity is not. Back in Nigeria, his parents say, his brilliance at chess would never have had an outlet.

“The U.S. is a dream country,” his dad told me. “Thank God I live in the greatest city in the world, which is New York, New York.”

Update: Many readers have asked if they can help Tani and his family. There is a GoFundMe account set up for the family: https://www.gofundme.com/just-tani

NOTE - lalastical front page things.

Your kind is the problem of the country. What has his tribe got to do with the issue at hand? Or is it only Yorubas that are making the contributions? Kai, may God save us from people like you. Very disgusting!
