Antidotes are substances that interact with an indigested toxic substance. Antidotes perform the following functions:

1. They neutralize the poison.

2. They convert the toxic substances to non-toxic or less toxic substances by forming complexes, more polar or insoluble derivatives etc.

3. They absorb and facilitate the elimination of toxic substances from the site of action. The complexes formed between the toxic substances and antidote should easily and quickly removed from the site and should reach the eliminating system which is usually kidney.
