An early morning fire outbreak on Monday destroyed seven classrooms at Badawa Secondary School in Kano.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the incident in a statement in Kano.

He said the seven classrooms were razed at about 1:30a.m, adding that investigation revealed that the incident was as a result of suspected electric spark from one of the laboratory classes.

“Cause of the inferno was suspected to be as a result of electric spark from one of laboratory classes.

“No lost of life or injury recorded” he added.

He said the fire was brought under control by the fire fighters. Haruna called on the people of Kano State to continue with their daily activities, stressing that people should not panic.

Speculations making rounds is that, the fire might have been triggered by members of the opposition party in an attempt to communicate their displeasure at the results of the recently concluded supplementary elections.

It will be recalled that violence erupted in the state, following the declaration of the winner in the supplementary governorship election held on Saturday.

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), had on Sunday night announced the incumbent governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as winner of the governorship election in Kano State, thereby returning him for a second term in office.

However, violence broke out in the state, Sunday night, as aggrieved people turned out in large numbers and were desperate to force their way into the state INEC office, but for the timely intervention of the police, who had also positioned themselves in some places around the state INEC office.”

The situation became worse when Professor Bello Balla Shehu, the returning official for the collation of the governorship rerun election, declared the governorship candidate of the APC, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as the winner of governorship election.

Prof. Bello Shehu, said that the APC candidate garnered 1,033,695, while that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abba Kabir scored 1,024,713 votes.

He said that the APC candidate defeated the PDP candidate with 8,982 votes margin and therefore declared Ganduje the winner having satisfied requirements of the law by scoring the highest number of votes.

To curb the irate youths from entering the state INEC office following the announcement of the results, teargas was fired by the Police.

The development has led to curfew for many residents of Sabongari, an area very close to the INEC office.
