1. Honesty, of course

Honesty is a priceless virtue in all areas of life. Regardless of what you do, honesty makes you stand out.

Telling the truth about the state of one’s car isn’t something most mechanics enjoy to do in Nigeria. In a bid to extort money from their customers, they exaggerate car problems and even create additional problems. When they have to buy an item that costs N5,000 to fix your car, they tell you it’s N10,000, and pocket the balance. Before you know it, you have spent a lot of money on things that don’t exist.

2. Timely delivery - Remember his words!

It’s common practice for Nigerian mechanics to keep customers’ cars in their workshop for days and weeks. Even after making payment for their service, they leave your car, claiming to be busy.

Cars aren’t meant to be packed, but driven. If your mechanic is in the habit of failing to make your car available to you at the agreed time, it’s a sign that they aren’t reliable. Nothing beats keeping to your words when it comes to service delivery. If you say two days, it shouldn’t exceed that.

3. Competence: No more problems after fix

So, you took your car to your mechanic for repairs. After the repairs, you take your car home, only to discover that it has developed another problem. In other words, you used your money to buy a problem. In the course of fixing the issue, the mechanic caused damage in another area. This is as a result of incompetence.

A competent mechanic understands the job very well. After fixing a car problem, they check every part of the car to certify that everything is in good condition.

4. Effective communication without jargons
One technique Nigerian mechanics use to extort money from car owners is the use of jargons to make the car problem sound so big. They don’t want you to understand what they are saying. If it sounds vague to you, you are most likely to believe them because you don’t have a clue of what they are talking about.

A good mechanic communicates in simple language because he/she has nothing to hide. They want you to understand what they are saying, so you’ll know what the problem is, and prevent it from happening again.

5. Satisfaction after all
Customer satisfaction is the ultimate goal in business. A car user is satisfied after a visit to the mechanic when their car is fixed for the long haul. The visit is a waste of time and resources if the problem resurfaces shortly after. You find yourself visiting the mechanic all the time over the same issue.

The mechanic workshop shouldn’t be your second home. You should only go there once in a while when inevitable car problems occur and also for routine car maintenance.
