2011: Tinubu Blasts Ibb, Urges Mass Resistance ! by wales(m): 7:26am On Sep 07, 2010
Former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lambasted Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) for declaring his ambition to contest next year’s presidential election.

Speaking yesterday at a book launch in Lagos, South-West Nigeria, Tinubu said Babangida and others who now claim to be democrats were the ones who annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election and thwarted the struggle by genuine democrats to revalidate it.

He said IBB should respect the aggregate wishes of Nigerians that they do not want him to return to power again.

Tinubu called for resistance against IBB’s ambition if he fails to shelve his quest to contest.

According to Tinubu, who was the Chief Presenter of Diary of a Debacle: Tracking Nigeria’s Failed Democratic Transition (1989-1994), written by Dr. Olatunji Dare, many of those who now claim to be democrats were actually those who frustrated the fight for the revalidation of the annulled 12 June 1993 presidential election which was adjudged the freest and fairest in the nation’s history.

“There are many of them who now preside over some of our democratic institutions including amending the constitution for us while the grandmasters of the annulment are preparing to come and reap where they did not sow.

“Do they say they are democrats and they want to contest the next election and they annulled June 12? We must resist and take control of our future. We must not forget history. We must go back to the basics,” he said.

Tinubu further took a swipe at politicians who are not consistent and who put their interest before those of the people of the country, describing them as “men of yester years who many years after would return to eat their vomit; those who become zoning advocate because of personal ambition.”

Speaking in the same vein, a stalwart of National Democratic Coalition, Chief Ayo Opadokun, called on Nigerians to resist Babangida.

He said the ‘evil genuis’ is toying with the citizens of this country.

Other speakers at the event also spoke against the ambition of the former military head of state. Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu, said the annulment of the June 12 election almost tore the country apart.

Ribadu, who said he was still in the police force when the election took place, added that the late Moshood Abiola won it.

He described the period as very important in the history of the nation and that the annulled election could not be treated with levity and the demands of cheap politics.

Denying that the northerners were happy over the annulment of the election, Ribadu said the act was the handiwork of “a tiny elite. The elite was emboldened by the disdain for the beauty and respect that defined the integrity of a social community.”

He said the annulment represented an act of political corruption that robbed 14 million voters of their franchise.

“It also denied our nation a badly needed peace and stability by generating so much conflict and tension in the land like the exile of hundreds of outstanding and bright Nigerians; and the persecution of numerous journalists, civil society and community activists, as well as many patriots.”

He advocated for the immortalization of Abiola.

How times change. Those who preach equity must come with clean hands. Mr Babangida now wants to enjoy the same fundamental human rights which he serially violated when he was in power for 8 years with nothing specific and unambiguous to show for it. shocked shocked

I guess Tinubu , the unrepentant thief, should be telling Nigerians who to vote and who not to vote . . .

IBB has the right to contest. There is even a high probabilty that he might win. However, it is your prerogative not to vote for him.

This does not in any way make Babangida a better man and Nigeria does not deserve him. It is funny the type of arguments that are being advanced to sell Babangida. When will Nigeria begin to learn from its past? Is Babangida the only one left in this country? Have people forgotten (so soon embarassed embarassed) what this man did while in office? In sane climes, is prior performance not a major factor (if not the only one) to select people into positions of leadership? What exactly (in specific and non-ambiguous terms - quoting figures and statistics of his pre and post years) did Babangida achieve in 8 whole years? Is this country jinxed for good and quality leadership?

As the old adage goes: Among the blinds, the one eyed man is the king. In the present Nigeria presidential election warm-up arena, IBB is the one eyed man in my view.
However, you can even decide to vote for Tinubu, the saint, if he decides to throw himself into the ring. . . .  Such is the beauty of democacy.

You can also join the race; at least you might be the only candidate without any stinking baggage . . . . grin

. . . . . . . . . .But you EGBON OBJ had every opportunity for 8 years to arrest and try IBB but he chose to claim there was no evidence to prosecute him.

So, why the noise now? when you couldnt even call OBJ to order then?. . . . . . . . . . . .

If that Yoruba Mad Man had done the right thing then, IBB wouldnt even be talking of contesting now . . . . . . . . .But since he didnt lets pretend IBB has not committed any crime.

OBJ should not be compared to IBB in any respect. To me, it's like comparing night and day. IBB is pure evil. Selfish in the indignant. Bad, bad rubbish.

An elderly man who does not respect his greyhair will be abused in public by kids. This is what is happening to IBB.

IBB was at the head of Nigerian govt for 8 years already. Isn't that the limit of our constitution? Abeg they should find away to disqualify this IBB guy.
I kinda believe he has good intentions and wants to change his reputation but he is such a risk.

I don't need any report to know those who are thieves, I'm only saying since he hasn't been convicted then he has a right to contest. Even if there is no other candidate i won't vote for him.  The only time he can't contest is if he has been indicted in a court of law.  Pinochet was not convicted with a report compiled by one body set up, but with evidence the law enforcement agents gathered.  What are the law enforcements officers and state prosecutors job?  You don't need a report to be published before prosecuting anybody.
