James did not say that if you didn't confess to one another, you will not be forgiven by God. James was encouraging the Jewish believers to be open with one another so that they can live at peace with themselves. Our total forgiveness of sins ( Past, Present and Future) was accomplished by Christ Jesus on the cross of Calvary. And anyone that puts his faith in what Christ did at the Cross is automatically forgiven forever.

James was just talking about Justification before men. He was urging them to be open and sincere with one another. It is not about justification before God.

I was reading your post to see if you can use a Bible verse to condemn confession of one's sins to one another. But I was disappointed.

These verses 13 to 18 is telling us that the unremitting prayer of a just person prevails over many things. Hence, we should confess our sins to one another, pray for one another, so that we will be saved.

He went further to give an example on how the prayer of Elijah who were regarded as a just person was answered on many occasions.

So James did not said that confessing your sins to one another is wrong.

Good one!

Having dealt with forgiveness of sins, it is ideal to deal with Repentance in order to balance up.
Repentance is different from forgiveness of sins. To repent u have to accept Jesus Christ as ur lord nd Savior.Rom10vs9-10.
But forgiveness of sins has to do with Christians dat have sin. If u are not a Christian forgiveness of sins is not for u, but repentance is all u need.

Why confessing when you might still go back to the sin.

Confessing is more like complaining. If you are not consciously aware of the motives behind committing the sins, one might returned back to it
Yes everybody has d tendency of returning back then their sins. The Bible says "let him dat stands take heed less he falls"!It is only God dat has d ability to keep us from falling.
The blood of Jesus Christ cleanse us from all unrighteousness (sins), but the blood of Jesus Christ will not prevent us from all unrighteousness.
Fellowship with the father nd having time with d word of God protect nd prevent us from all unrighteousness Acts20vs32.When d word of God dwells richly in u, it helps to stand firm.

The Bible never condemned confession of sins to one another, but what is the essence when u can easily confess ur sins to God nd he will forgive u.
I fink confession of faults to one another as to do with clearing of one's conscience nd be free from self condemnation.

What the Bible is implying here(James 5:16) is not sin but fault:offences, wrongdoing, error against one another and not against God. for example, if you gossip or slander your brother and you realize your error, go meet him/her and confess your wrongdoings.

What's the essence of John20:21-23?

Why did Jesus Christ delegated authority to his ministers to act as mediators of reconciliation when he breathed on them in John 20:21-23?

Exactly, your confession must match your character

James 5:16 King James Version (KJV)
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Oga when you commit sins against your fellow humans, haven't you committed sins against God?

Making a false spoken statement damaging to a person's reputation (slander) is a sin. So when you make a statement to slander someone, you have committed a sin.

Stealing is also a sin. If someone steal your money, haven't he/she committed sin?

Fault is the same as sin.

What that verse means is: if you do wrong to your brother or anyone, you owe such a person and that's apologizing.
This is the reason God doesn't want us to be in such a position. Owe no man anything but LOVE

(1Jn 1:9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Unlike what is popularly believed out there, this verse isn’t saying you need to go to a priest, a pastor or even a fellow brother/sister in church and tell them every evil thing you have done within the week before God would ever forgive you.

It is also not saying you need to make an itemized list of your sins and verbally pour them out to God one by one while begging Him to have mercy on you and give you a second chance to act right.

The Greek word translated as “we confess” in 1 John 1:9, is the word “homologomen.” When properly translated, “Homologomen” means “to say the same thing as another, i.e to agree with, assent.”
In this context, “homologomen” would mean “to say the same thing God has said concerning our sins” or “to agree that what God has spoken concerning sin is true.” That is, if we assent to what God has already said concerning sin, then we’ll receive the forgiveness of sins for all times.

So what is it that God has said that we are to agree to? Let’s see the previous and next verses together.

(1Jn 1:cool If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

(1Jn 1:9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(1Jn 1:10) If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

From the above verses, we that we are to agree that.

1. Sin exists (verse cool

2. We have sinned (verse 10)

Else we make God a liar and His free gift of forgiveness does not apply to us seeing that we have rejected it by our unbelief and refusal to acknowledge our need for it.

Reading from verse 1, we see that the author was throughout the chapter talking to a set of people who were in the church but refuse to accept the divinity of Jesus, the existence of sin and their need for God’s forgiveness.

So the author having taken time to explain the divinity of Jesus and our fellowship (oneness) with Him by Faith, invites this set of people to acknowledge these things including the existence of sin and their need for forgiveness so all their sins could be forgiven them. It is just as simple as that.

The verse isn’t asking you to wake up in the morning or even before you go to bed at night to cry, roll on the floor and list out every evil thing you have done before God or man. It was written to those who have NOT fully accepted what God has said and done concerning sin, imploring them to do so.

For the man who had already believed and received all that Jesus has done, 1 John 2:1-2 now points him to the cross everytime he sins, to see the one who is the sacrifice for his sins. It is through that one (Jesus) that we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Not through our openly or privately verbalizing them one by one.

(Col 1:13) Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

(Col 1:14) In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

(Col 2:13) And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses

If you decide to still continually list out your sins one by one and ask the Lord to forgive you of them every time you sin, feel free. If you decide not to but trust in His Word that He has already forgiven you, better. As long as you know that you are forgiven not according to your listing or not listing them out but according to the riches of His grace, then you are good.

I hope this blesses you.

Glory to God!

One thing about those who don’t endure sound doctrine is that when they see simple, clear things in scripture that conflicts with what they choose to believe, they begin to seek “deeper” meanings, complain of poor translation, and then bend things until scripture sounds like what they want to hear.

You’ve taken a part of scripture, manipulated it to mean what you want, yet you’ve quoted other parts and accepted as is.

If you fall into sin as a born again believer, face your Saviour, humbly and honestly admit the fact that you've fallen, talk to your Saviour about it and receive cleansing by the blood of Christ.

He gives grace to the humble, but resists the proud. The words are simple, the tenses are simple, the translation is simple. No need for complications here.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. 2 Tim 4:3-5
