Hi

we took some of our definitions/explanations from Investopedia and Money Crashers

What is the Sharing Economy

The sharing economy is an economic model often defined as a peer-to-peer (P2P) based activity of acquiring, providing or sharing access to goods and services that are facilitated by a community based on-line platform.

Sharing economies allow individuals and groups to make money from underused assets. In this way, physical assets are shared as services. Take for instance car sharing services like Lyft and Uber or apartment sharing platform like Co-Tenant.

Co-working Platforms - Companies that provide shared open work spaces for freelancers, entrepreneurs, and work-from-home employees in major metropolitan areas.
Peer-to-Peer Lending Platforms – Companies that allow for individuals to lend money to other individuals at rates cheaper than those offered through traditional credit lending entities.
Fashion Platforms – Sites that allow for individuals to sell or rent their clothes.
Freelancing Platforms – Sites that offer to match freelance workers across a wide spectrum ranging from traditional freelance work to services traditionally reserved to handymen.

Apartment/house sharing platforms, such as Co-Tenant, connect homeowners with people who need a place to stay when they’re traveling or close to where they work. Hosts set the nightly price and specify available dates, typically when they’re not using the property. In preparation for a trip, visitors can browse accommodations in their destination and choose a place that fits their desired neighborhood, amenity needs, and budget.

Ridesharing and carsharing offer some of the benefits of car ownership, such as easy access to a city without having to rely on public transit, with few of the drawbacks, such as paying for gas, insurance, and maintenance.
With apps like Uber and Taxify, you can hail a ride from drivers in their personal vehicles. we have bike services like gokada etc

Coworking lets you share the cost of office rent, utilities, storage, mail, and office supplies with other professionals. It’s particularly useful for freelancers, sole proprietors, and very small businesses that don’t have huge inventories requiring lots of storage space.

Websites like jiji and olx let you buy, sell and sometimes trade new and used goods.

The sharing economy is built on the idea that sharing certain goods, services, and skills is more efficient. This can reduce costs for available goods, services, and time.
Ride sharing and car sharing, for instance, reduce the number of cars on the road, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and also reducing traffic. They also reduce the number of new cars that need to be made and sold each year, saving the energy and natural resources used to produce them. Reselling and trading do the same with other types of goods.

On the other side of the transaction, an owner can unlock the potential value of an item, such as a vehicle that would otherwise be sitting in the driveway or a talent that wouldn’t be utilized in a day job, by sharing it when it’s not in use. By giving rides or working in a talent marketplace, you can replace or supplement the income you’d earn in a traditional job. By renting out your house or possessions, you can earn passive income while you’re doing other things – possibly fun things, like going on vacation.

The sharing economy offers access to things that might not be practical to own or obtain. For instance, many people simply can’t afford a car or convince a traditional bank to extend a personal loan. Peer networks make it possible to access such things without asking participants to pay a lot or assume unacceptable amounts of risk.
