Pig farming also referred to as livestock farming is one of the most lucrative business a farmer could venture into in Nigeria, however this goldmine business is been overlooked in Nigeria.

Sometimes people don’t venture into this type of farming due to the nature of the animal, or perhaps lack of a proper business insight, but research shows that there is a high demand for pig meat in Nigeria.

Pigs have a good reproductive status, a pig could give birth to 15 (boar or sow) -piglets at once, boar which is referred to as the male pig and sow the female pig.

With this statistics in mind, say a farmer is able to rear 200 matured pig in a year, this would amount to over 6million Naira in a year. if a farmer is able to rear 2,000 pig in a year, it would amount to 60miilion Naira – that would take an estimate of 133 matured pigs to re-produce over 15 piglets.
There is a lot of profit in this kind of farming , however there is a lot of work load in piggery, pigs are usually dirty in nature, and if not bred properly pig farming would be very stressful agricultural business to venture into.

This article is for those that are new to pig farming. to help them understand the requirement for this type of farming and also for those who are already into piggery and need more maintenance skill for there animals.

Done with a lot introduction; so the main question is, how do i start up a pig farm ? (newbie). Basic Requirements:

A secure Location for breeding

Pigs are usually dirty, so it is advisable they are trained out of a town , with large area of land.

Depending on how you plan to nourish your pigs, a plot of land may just be okay for small-scale, but if you can acquire a sizable farmland (from 5 acres) which will be better so that your pig can graze in the wild and retire to the pen where they’d continue nourishing.

In this kind of farming, land is a major investment, and it is always advisable to practice this type of farming on a personal space, not a rented space/land.

one can achieve this by Looking for land in a rural area where its is more cheaper. an acre of land in a rural area will be from around N200,000 – N300,000.

Due to the nature of this kind of animal, it is best one breed them in a rural area, since pigs are always dirty, plus it is not advisable to breed them close to a residential area because of the smell that could be dangerous to health.

Your Product can be transported to the town or on the other hand, buthcers can locate the farm so as to buy, thereby saving cost of transportation. It is good to raise pigs in a pasture, making them go out occasionally to graze in the field where they will get plants to consume, this can only be achieved when you have large farmland (Pasture Surface) to cater for them. As they mature, you would be mindful so that they do not wander away.

Small Scale startup estimate –

land 200,000 Naira for an acre of land, could contain over 50 – 100 mature pigs in one year.
Healthy Piglets

On a small scale, a minimum of 30 – 50 piglets is enough, one could start by buying from a trusted source and making sure they have history of vaccination.

Its is very important not to start with a lot of piglets, a minimum of 30 to 50 is a good start.

This way you would learn to acquaint your self with this kind of farming, this way the chances of risking all your investment would be minimal due to startup pitfalls.
Get a Veterinary Doctor

In this kind of farming, You may constantly be-needing the services of vet doctor for regular check up and vaccination as well as feeding and nutrition advice. Pigs generally eat what human being eat, and does not present many worries when it comes to feeding.
Employ Workers

if your pigs are above 100, the work load would be quite stressful for just one person to handle, a minimal of 3 – 5 workers would do. if you probably starting on a smaller scale, 1 – 2 workers who will be assisting in the cleaning of the pigs and the pens, feeding the pigs and making sure they are well behaved and other things necessary would be fine.
Preparing there feed

Feeding is a vital part of this kind of farming, pigs eat a lot, they eat a large variety of jung , garbage, and almost anything, they can even eat human being itself.

Pigs need balanced diet such as fiber, energy, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to thrive.

Pigs Feed will take the major chunk of your spending on this kind of farming.
Maintenance routine

mapping out a cleanup and vaccination day for your pig is very mandatory, just like other animals, they would equally fall sick and die if not properly taken care of.

Though they have a dirty nature, they could also die of infection from dirty and contaminated environment.it is therefore important to constantly soak and drench them with clean water, thought they could be a very hard animal to flip and wash, however, there are affordable farming machines and equipment which could simplify this task for us.
