Germany is ready to accept some of the 64 migrants trapped on the rescue vessel Alan Kurdi, which has been prevented from entering ports in Italy and Malta, the German Interior Minister, Horst Seehofer, said in Berlin on Friday.

Seehofer called on other European Union member states to assist. “It has to be a joint action,’’ he said.

The Alan Kurdi, operated by the Regensburg-Germany based organisation Sea-Eye, rescued the migrants off the Libyan coast earlier this week but has been unable to dock at a safe port.

Italy considers Germany to be obligated to act, as the ship sails under a German flag.

The vessel, currently in the vicinity of Italy’s Lampedusa Island, off the North African coast, is battling heavy seas, according to its crew.

Seehofer expressed irritation at the fact that no durable EU solution to the problem of distributing migrants crossing the Mediterranean had been found.

“We are still miles away from a European solution,’’ he said. “The commission should become much more active here.’’
