@POLITICSNGR

The Founder/Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, Mr. Jim Ovia, recently encouraged the Federal Government to license more private universities and academic institutions of higher learning in order to improve the quality of education in Nigeria.

Mr. Ovia made this statement while delivering his acceptance speech following his award of the honorary Doctor of Science (DSc.) honoris causa degree at the recently concluded University of Lagos 50th Convocation Ceremony. According to him, “the state of education in the country requires the intervention of the private sector. The Federal and State Governments cannot do it alone.”

He called on the private sector “to support the improvement of education in Nigeria.”

Mr Ovia is one of the three doctorate honourees at the above-mentioned convocation.

cool

This is hate speech... All we need is investment in cattle ranches across the nation. Education is too expensive, cattle ranching is very cheap. We need to save cost and spend wisely.

What a pity... Jim Ovia lacks foresight.

Will Nigerians accept it like that?. Quality education costs money. That's why you see some fools and idiots saying Oyedepo's CU fees are too high for the average person but that same person wouldnt mind paying that figure in 10 fold for a university in the UK. While private sector involvement would benefit the education sector in Nigeria, we must be ready to accept the collateral damage. It's either we produce 1 million half baked graduates or we produce 100k well seasoned graduates annually . Well I leave the decision for Thanos himself

That’s how they sound only to please this government.
When the national budget was cut down from 2015 12.74% to an all time low of 7.4% by this Buhari lead government they dint speak against it.

Instead of licensing MORE academics institutions, they should rather work on the existing ones and improve our quality of education.
Our personal view on this case.

Well said private entities should chook hand inside providing free quality public education and work out some kind of tax break or incentive with fed gov't for their effort.
Whenever I see that warri geh's video I just feel bad for the other students who didn't get that opportunity

Jim Ovia walks the talk... @Covenant university received over $270,000 from Jim Ovia foundation to train 7 Nigerian students and three foreigners(Africans not from Nigeria) throughout their academic study in 2018! He funded another 10 in Asheshi university Ghana.
God bless Ovia

Quality education cost money. Nigerians will not get that with 50k per term tuition while being taught by academics with minimal research funding. A politician will rather flow with the masses and let things be the way they are while he/she enjoys a smooth tenure . Till the masses push for reforms in all sectors nothing will change.

Education is expensive, but Nigerians are poor or skirting around poverty. 92.x% of Nigerians live on less than $5.5 a day. It is why economic growth in the real sector(manufacturing) is desperately needed to provide high paying jobs. The root cause of people protesting fee hikes is poverty.

Covenant not Convenant. You see why you couldn't make first class? Stop beefing private universities. Pray to be rich enough to send your kids there.

As much as he has a point, we don't need the government to abdicate its responsibility to provide quality education. Other than the US, every sane country's best universities are public not private.

Nigerians need to hold her leaders accountable to provide funding to the public education sector. Abdicating the responsibility of providing quality education to the private sector is not a good thing.

there is NO such thing as turning first class to "Purewater"

If 10-15% of your students cannot make a first class, then the school should be ashsmed of itself

But Nigerians take pride in foolishness sha; that is why we are having the problems we have (like a lecturer being proud of himself that almost half of the students failed his course )

Those claiming to make first class gold have turn the society into a plastic and failing one on their way to making first class degree gold. You choose between a plastic society with few golden first class and a golden society with many sachet water first class. Rubbish!
