Internet is one of the most useful innovation known to man through the use of technology, It's use to access both local and international news, it makes communication to be easier through the use of social media, it's use in the educational sector, banking sector, industrial sector and other important sectors that contribute to the development of a country. However, As much as there are many positive effects of the internet, so are the many negative effects of the internet.

Internet is a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.

Below are some of the negative effects of the internet :

i) ONLINE ABUSE. Online abuse is often common, It happens in form of cyber bullying and harassment. One out of Five people has been reported to be a victim of cyber bullying. Since the tendency of people to behave more offensively online than they would in person is high, people tend to backlash through counter argument, hate speech, public mockery and in extreme cases, through kidnapping, rape and death threats.



ii) FAKE NEWS : This is another negative effect of the internet, Since internet is easily accessible to many people and posting of  information is easy. Many people often spread   inaccurate, invalid, and outdated information to people which can cause many problems.



iii) INTERNET FRAUD. Internet scammer are always devising new means to scam people but they often operate by creating  fake profiles impersonating another person, hacking, email phishing, selling fake product and services,  and through most online relationship website scamming people who are genuinely seeking for love and be in a relationship.

iv) Time Wastage: The amount of time people spent surfing the internet makes them to be inactive and reduces their productivity. Internet surfing subsequently results in interference with regular social life, including academics, professional performance and daily routines.

v) Internet Addiction Disorder : Overuse of the internet often leads to Internet addiction disorder which is most relevant to adolescence (12-17 years) and emerging adults (18-29 years). People with Internet addiction disorder  often experience  depression, agitation, anxiety and at times anger when  there is no means for internet or when the means is taken from them.

vi) Easy Access To Explicit Contents  Underage often gets easy access to pornography, adults fictional novel and at times online prostitutions website through the use of internet and social media.

vii) Level  Of  Verbal Communication Reduces : Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Skype, Imo, Snapchat, Instagram and other social media sites has rob us the chance to communicate with our love ones face to face, and thereby reducing the amount of emotions and love we give to them through verbal communication.

BOTTOM LINE.

Internet is good, in fact it has helped alot of developmental projects in the country, it's use in the educational sector, banking, industrial sector, broadcasting corporations and by individuals but we cannot say that it doesn't have it own negative side, because some people actually post their personal information to the net that often put them in danger. Also, Overuse of the internet reduces creativity and productivity in our society.

Learning to use, adapt and be able to control our usage of the internet is the key.
