In 2004, taking off shirts while celebrating a goal during a football match became punishable by a yellow card. This was not the case before then until a Manchester United footballer pulled off his shirt while celebrating and refusing to put it back on in time.

His name is Diego Forlan. The former Uruguayan international forced FIFA to review the law 12 of the footballing rules after refusing to put on his shirt following a shirtless celebration of the winning goal which he scored against Southampton in 2004. The reviewed law now empowers the match official to show a yellow card to any footballer who contravenes the rule.

The law also puts in check, time wastage. It prevents players from vehemently celebrating so as not to enroach on the limited match time.

The law is also in place to prevent players from sending messages whether personal, political, or even paying homage or supporting a cause. This is to keep the neutrality of FIFA clean.

The rule has been of immense benefit to brand sponsors who pay huge sum of money for their brands to be displayed so as to be seen by as many as possible. Taking off shirt during celebration denies the brand sponsors necessary revenues. While FIFA do not emphasise marketing reasons, brand sponsors are particular about them but some footballers don't really care as they fling their shirts seamlessly.
