Not appreciated.

The captive market is too small to make a globally competitive car. Also, I'm sure won't be of the highest quality neither will it be technological up to date.

Due to the lack of economies of scale, the car will cost more than similar models.

All thise protectionismhas simply denied the average Kenyan the opportunity of buying cheaper and more sophisticated cars.
...kudos to you- maybe agent for the ' 3-alphabet agency' partly responsible for destroying Africa ( plus their house nighas).
You identify them by their buzz words: free trade, globalization and protectionism- which are code words for market cannibalism- destroying other nations industries while flooding their victims' countries with used/ useless goods.
Well done.

Well done.

The IMF did not destroy those economies, they did it themselves.

Or why did they go to the IMF in the first place? Who forced them to approach the IMF?. The IMF isn't by force.

Are things so bad you had to go and approach the IMF?
That's the question you should ask. Ate things so bad to have to turn to the IMF?

First of all, you mention free trade. What's wrong with free trade?

Why does the IMF advise countries to liberalise trade? Simple, to force companies to get out of industries it has no comparative advantage and focus on the ones you have it.

When in 2013 or so, the then minister of investment and trade introduced the an automotive policy, the goal was to make cars in Nigeria.

Pat Utomi said this is the wrong way to go. Rather than build a car, why not focus on a niche in the car industry such as tyre production.

Imagine if Nigeria supplied 10% of the tires used worldwide in the car industry or the brake pads. That would be worth billions of dollars. Have a few niches like that and you'll know what's up.

Look at crude oil for example. Just this one product made this country wealthy. Imaginenj if Nigeria had gone further by refining 3m barrels of crude oil daily, was the 2nd largest exporter of gas in Africa after Algeria, was the largest producer of petrochemicals and fertiliser in Africa and had a few world beating companies in the oil servicing sector by controlling some niches, how big do you think the economy will be? Probably 4-6 times larger

Basically trade liberalisation stops you from focusing on your small local market and focus on the global market instead.

Foreign Direct Investor tends to focus on where you have comparative advantage. They produce for the African market or world market from your country.

If the country was doing well, long departed Dunlop would have produced for the local and international market. Perhaps, only 20% of their production would be for the local market.

Nothing wrong with globalisation.

Protectionism is bad as it encourages the flow of capital to industry you suck at

It is not when you stop importing toothpick and pencil that will make you rich. Many people who say things aren't economist but we treat their word as gold.
