Apart from creating employment for the youths of Ikono Uyo, the governor said the road when completed would open up the long neglected area for commercial and economic growth.

Mr Emmanuel broke the news, Saturday, at Nnung Ukim Ikono, while addressing sympathizers at the funeral service of the Late Madam Atim Okon, mother of the Chairman, Uyo Local Government Council, Hon. Imoh Okon, who died at the age of 86.

Other dignitaries who accompanied the governor included the first lady; Mrs Martha Udom Emmanuel and deputy governor; Mr Moses Ekpo.

The list of senior citizens at the event also had the State Chief Judge, Justice Godwin Abraham, former Governor of the State, Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga and wife Funmi, former Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshall Nsikak Eduok, National Assembly members, State Assembly members, Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, Head of the State Civil Service, Mrs. Ekereobong Akpan, members of the State Executive Council, Paramount Ruler of Uyo Local Government Area, His Royal Majesty Edidem Sylvanus Okon, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State council, Elder Patrick Albert, Traditional Rulers, Local Government Chairmen and their spouses as well as Captains of Industries among others.

The State Chief Executive who thanked the people of Ikono-Uyo for giving maximum support to his government pledged to consolidate on his achievements and also embark on more people oriented projects.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Works, Mr Ephaim Inyang-Eyen, who reacted to the news said the gesture of the governor is geared towards deepening the spread of economic enablers to engender development.

He explained that the focus of the administration on constructing more rural roads was to open new areas for enhanced economic activity and improved livelihoods for the people.

According to the Works boss, "to ensure even and accelerated development in all parts of Akwa Ibom, the Udom Emmanuel administration has placed high premium on infrastructure development as evident in the construction and rehabilitation of over 1700km of roads and bridges across the State".

Inyang-Eyen reasoned that, "if governance is truly about adding value to people’s lives and propounding creative solutions to critical societal needs, then Akwa Ibom State under the leadership of His Excellency, Mr Udom Emmanuel is actually on the right path in its pact with the citizenry"

He however implored citizens to protect and preserve the roads infrastructure provided for them saying, "they represent our collective heritage"
