The governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, has been endorsed by 21 youth groups across the state working under the aegis of Adamawa Integrated Youth Forum.

Mr Nyako is one of the governors whose tenures were truncated by election tribunals and had hoped to remain in office till 2012 but the Independent National Electoral Commission has announced elections will hold in such states along with other states in January 2011.

Although aides of the governor said they are preparing a legal challenge to INEC’s directive, they said they are still focused on the re-election of their principal next year.

The other affected governors of Kogi and Ekiti states have gone to court over the matter and Mr Nyako has also notified INEC of his willingness to challenge the decision in court, telling journalists in Yola that the law was belated and retrospective.

“We want to use this medium to call on our learned elders in the Supreme Court of Nigeria to deliver judgment with justice, considering the second oath of office given to Mr Nyako to serve a four year tenure, as we cannot take INEC recent decision to end his government in 2011,” the Integrated Youth Forum, drumming support for the governor’s re-election, stated through their spokesman, Desmond D. Minakaro.

He stated that youth groups in all the 21 local councils of the state recently came together to demonstrate their support for the programmes and policies of the Nyako administration, with particular emphasis on the achievement of the government in the educational sector and road construction .

“Time will not allow us to mention all the achievements recorded by this God-sent leader, but you will agree with me that our reasons for standing firm in his support is justifiable ,” Mr. Desmond said.

The Forum also denounced the Adamawa Elders’ Forum, a socio-political organization, which recently accused the Nyako administration of religious and ethnic chauvinism.

Support for Jonathan

The group also expressed support for President Goodluck Jonathan, saying they would work to ensure his victory at the polls.

The group stated that the country is now witnessing giant strides in human and infrastructural development under the president and vowed to support him.

“Our support for Nyako and President Jonathan is not borne out of any selfish interest, but due to records set by their purposeful leaderships,” Mr Desmond said.
