The Kwara State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill to restrain incoming government from dissolving the existing 16 local government councils of the state before the expiration of their three-year tenure.

The bill, which is an amendment, is sponsored by Kamal Fagbemi (PDP-Okeogun) and passed after the members expressed satisfaction with all clauses contained in the document.

The motion for the third reading and passage of the bill was moved by the House Majority Leader, Hassan Oyeleke.

Before the passage of the bill, the lawmakers in their contributions, described as unconstitutional the dissolution of democratically elected local councils.

The Deputy Speaker, Mathew Okedare, who presided over the plenary, directed the Clerk of the House, Halimat Kperogi, to prepare a clean copy of the bill for the governor’s assent.

Mr Okedare said the third tier of government was strategic to accelerated socio-economic transformation at the grassroots.

The last local government elections were held in the state on November 17, 2017 where all the 16 councils and the then All Progressives Congress won all the seats (APC).

The members of the councils are expected to spend three years in office.

They, however, defected to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) shortly before the 2019 general elections.

This shows the excuse that the governor controls state assembly is false. The fact is they can restrain executive but choose not to. If they can vote to approve their own autonomy there's nothing stopping from doing same for local governments.

Local government elections do look suspicious to say least. Its hard to believe the party just sweeps state like that. Im guessing the local governments switch parties to not get starved of funds.

Approved for LG autonomy: Benue, Plateau, Niger, Bauchi, Sokoto, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, Kwara and Ogun

Voted Against LG autonomy: Edo, Rivers and Imo

If the outgoing lawmakers can use legislation to restrain, what stops the incoming lawmakers from using legislation to liberate? ..or did Saraki tell them their law is absolute?

This Saraki no too get sense walahi. He wants to continue his stranglehold on Kwara State through the local governments and he thinks people can’t see through the charade he’s orchestrating. This is dead on arrival. The incoming APC led assembly will simply repeal the law and enact another one to remove all the PDP council chairmen.

I hope the current Assembly has heard the repeal in legislation. Those council chairmen won’t be in office by October, because the first thing the incoming assembly will do is repeal the law and suspend all the PDP council chairmen.

This bill can only survive if the incoming legislature is control by PDP or APC cannot make two third majority.

APC won all Assembly seats in the just concluded election. Therefore, it will just take few minutes to throw Sarakis new senseless bill into the trash bin. The constitution specifies two third majority to reverse a bill, but APC has 100% of the incoming Assembly, so Saraki and his house-boy on governorship seat should relocate to Biafra Republic for asylum.

.This is saraki trying a comeback. He his trying to keep his people in government till next election. Saraki knows that, if his followers are not pacified with positions he will lose them.
The only way he can gain power back is if Abdulraham fall out from citizen grace.

Use your head brother...this is a simple ploy to arm twist the incoming APC gov't in the state, for If it becomes law b4 may 29 then it becomes difficult to get rid of the council Chairmen who happens to be in the opposition...trying to compensate them
