The first quarter of the year 2020 was very unusual – it was the period the world stood still; one we can never forget no thanks to COVID-19 – described as a pandemic threatening the survival of humanity. The impact of the virus is unprecedented in world history. But governments and partners are working assiduously together to stop its transmission and keep children and their families safe through isolation and social distancing.

And to ensure containment, development partners and governments directed that all social and economic activities should be locked down in all the affected nation-states including Nigeria.

It is pointless to say that we are living in a very challenging time, socially, professionally and economically. The current restrictions mean that the business environment is very tough altering business models for almost all the industry and professions. While some industries (tourism, aviation, and financial services) are on a life support presently, it is a boom period for others (telecoms, healthcare and medical supply, retail and food processing).

So, how best should businesses respond to survive the onslaught? The best approach is to adapt and make the best use of the situation. The other option is to do nothing and perish. But you don’t want to experience that, do you? This is the time to task your brains to do some lateral thinking to generate new ideas which are the stuff of change and progress in every field from science to art, from politics to personal happiness.

a) The credit relief of $136.6M and additional N50billion facility through the NIRSAL Microfinance Bank for households, small and medium-sized enterprises, airline service providers, hotels, and health care merchants affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

b) The apex bank dropped interest rates on all its intervention funds from 9 percent to 5 percent per annum for one-year effective March 1, 2020.

c) Unspecified credit support for pharmaceutical companies intending to expand or establish their own drug manufacturing plants in Nigeria as well as to hospital and health care practitioners who intend to build or expand to world class standards.

d) Forbearance to big businesses by granting banks leave to consider the temporary restructuring of the tenure and loan terms for businesses and households most affected by the outbreak, particularly the oil and gas, agriculture and manufacturing.

People always love a discount. You’ll get much better results just because of the coupon than anything else. Make sure it is a good discount that will impress them. If you do a good job with your first job for them, you’ll more than make up for it on future jobs.

Include a photo of the product you are offering a discount on. If it’s a service business like a plumber, you could show a photo of you fixing someones water heater. Showing the product or service will increase the number of people who will redeem your coupons.

7. Make it easy for them to find you
I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen flyers that were perfectly designed and had a great compelling message but… I couldn’t figure out where they were. They forgot the add their address. Or, they only included a phone number though they were a retail shop I just wanted to drop in.

Make it as easy as possible for them to contact you. Tell them what to do.

“Come in today to 123 Somewhere Street on the corner of Somewhere Street and 1st Ave”

Include a map if you can. Make it as easy as possible. If you want them to order online, include your website. Make it big and bold. Your call to action items should always be much bigger than the rest of the text on any flyer.

LAGOS ADVERT AGENCY RELEASES GUIDELINES ON PASTING OF POSTERS FOR POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS

Lagos State Signage and Advertisements Agency (LASAA) has issued guidelines on the use of election campaign materials in the state ahead of the 2023 general elections as provided under its enabling law.

Managing Director of LASAA, Mr. Adedamola Docemo, who spoke on the guidelines, yesterday, urged everyone involved to comply for sanity and to protect the environment from defilement, visual blight and other adverse effects of uncontrolled or unregulated deployment and display of political campaign materials within the state during the upcoming electioneering period.

Docemo said: “The guidelines are issued without prejudice to any political party, association or aspirant as it is the agency’s intention to ensure fairness and equity among all concerned stakeholders, while judiciously performing its duties and applying the rules without sentiment or bias.

“Based on the guidelines, political campaigns on billboards and wall drapes may only be deployed on existing structures owned and operated by outdoor advertising practitioners who are registered with the agency and have obtained permits for such sites and structures.

“A-frame may only be placed on road verges, medians on inner streets and must not exceed a size of 2×1 metre (big size) and 0.5 x 0.5 metre (small size) and it must have a distance of not less than 100 metres between each sign deployed, which must be made of standard and sturdy materials to ensure that they do not drop or block the roads.”

On the use of banners, these can only be displayed on inner roads and streets, and must be attached to the wall of a particular building – with the consent/agreement of the building owners – limited to inner streets and also not tied to poles or public utilities, including electric and telecom poles.

Also, on the use of posters, the guidelines allow that they may be pasted on designated surfaces on inner streets only and not seen on highways, major roads and high streets.

The posters must not be pasted on public utility structures, such as streetlamp poles, transformers, bridge pillars/barriers, road directional sign, electrical poles and other unauthorised surfaces.

The agency, therefore, strongly advised that political parties and aspirants must refrain from indiscriminate deployment of campaign posters and embrace the use of other creative and innovative platforms, including stick in the ground, billboards mobile A-frames and mobile adverts.

It also reiterated its readiness to assist and co-operate with all political parties, politicians, campaigners and their supporters in ensuring that they have a hitch-free political participation.
