Let me make a defence!
In a country or state of hospital where you dont have an infrared thermometer, that you can use to check without body contact. It is advisable to have yours to prevent cross infection.
Now the mother is quick to act, not knowing the nurse is at her defence.
Your drs won't tell you that because you see them as saints, they are the one who doesn't require thermometer, but will send the baby back to the nurse if the temperature is not documented.
Nigerians and hypocrisy...
In a country where what you need to provide your greatest service to your patients are not available , you gats to improvise.
Mercury Thermometer is #200 , cross infection gotten from public use of thermometer can make you spend thousands.
Prevention is cheaper than cure .

#love a nurse.

My wife was asked to do same. They said after that, the device remains with us to be checking our children's temperature.

This practice is not new @ general hospital in Akure ondo state you will buy and have your personal thermometer which nurses will use for you anytime they come around. Even at emergency unit FMC owo,it is the something, when you are leaving the hospital you go with it to your house

There is nothing wrong with asking you to buy ur own thermometer. It is the practice in most General and government hospitals.U should have ur own to prevent spread of infection.. I bought a thermometer when I was on admission at teaching hospital and took it home. Its my property which I use to check myself sometimes when I have fever. So there is nothing wrong with that Abeg.200 or 300 naira will not kill you..Every nonense makes it to front page these days.

Lolzzz... Nothing we no go hear... Most general hospitals and their nurses in particular are jus something else..
This is Nigeria. Any thing to do with Science and Technology is never respected by the Government and people. Never any money for equipment. Just buy your own equipment and get your treatment.
-
We treat science as rubbish in this country because we're always importing advance finished products. We don't make the products ourselves. Hence there's no need to buy the tools to manufacture the products.
No tools = No equipment.

I believe children's temperature are checked with the thermometer in their mouth, so she wish to risk the baby getting another disease other than fever abi?. Use your head.

What is this one saying again. So you want the nurse to use her teeth as thermometer abi? So you take it to social media so that the nurse can be sacked abi. Receive sense. She has many reasons for doing that. She may be trying to prevent cross infection as it's done in standard hospital. Maybe there is no hospital thermometer and she is doing her private business. It is done every where. And no crime to it. Tell your senator, rep, governor and buhari to supply every patient with a thermometer, so that the nurse will not tell you to buy next time. Or think government hospital is free? Every blame must be on the nurse head? Rabbish.

Shey, when the British were here colonising us, we drove them away, that we want independence.
Since they left in 1960, we've been fighting and CHEATING each other.
People are now vexing and emigrating to UK, the same colonial masters we said should leave us alone.
You are complaining about Nigerian leaders? Why didn't the leaders, learn from the British how to rule Nigerians before pursuing them away?

Most of the comments have exposed the ignorance of most Nigerians. When you present to a hospital, you have to get your own gloves, spirit, thermometer, plasticide and other personal stuffs. You don't expect them to use the same thermometer for all patients that present to the facility, it's not healthy.

The problem here is not the nurses. It's the hospital management. Some of these hospitals do not have medical equipments and drugs. Even when the health workers inform the appropriate authority about the situation they fail to do something about it. Sometimes the government approves funds for these equipments but they are looted by the corrupt administrators.

The nurses wanted to attend to your baby but no equipments. If you had provided the equipment to the shame of the hospital administration they would've gladly attended to your baby.

Its normal in govt hospitals. And the thermometers are cheap nowadays, less than 500 naira. Ideally you won't want to share such a device with someone else that you don't know what brought them to the hospital. Those govt nurses might not clean it properly before using on the next patient so its better to have your own thermometer.

I was just about to write this down. To reduce the risk of getting infected through shared commodities like thermometer, it is much better to use yours. Again, to reduce the incidence of corruption within the hospital, it is better the patient purchases theirs at any place of their choosing. She is probably a first time mom. This is a common practice and a welcomed one at that.

A woman presents her child in an hospital and was asked to go and buy thermometer first and u tell me it is normal.
I give up.

She have a point, just that the transfer of aggression wasn't directed to the right person. Most other offices in Nigeria, u pay for virtually everything. Nigeria Hosp. Isn't exclusive. The poor nurse may not be provided thermometer to work with from the management and I wouldn't expect her to buy it with her money. Infact, Nurses don suffer.
