The security situation in Nigeria is now extremely precarious. Some of us who know more now need to alert the nation that we are on the brink of allowing commercial lawlessness to be the salient income generation pathway, for the youth of this country. Things are happening in over a dozen states that the media is not giving good attention. There is now a new class of entrepreneurs who trade in lawlessness and chaos.Yet our official security apparatus are as reactive as ever but mostly ineffective in stemming the tide of kidnappings, banditry, murders, unlawful human organ harvesting and ritual killings.

A story, one of many that I have been briefed about will best illustrate this menace that information. So the bank staff can be in one state and supply information to kidnappers in another state. This menace is now growing several tentacles as the ineffectiveness of our security has emboldened lawlessness and create new industries in criminality.

With no moral compass both the jobless and the employed now form alliances to victimise Nigerians at will. Yet we have a government. Truth is this problem was created by only one group of people: Politicians. Many of the Governors and NA members from 2003 have funded and armed political thugs to help them win elections. Trouble is after elections, the armed thugs now feel above the law and they eventually grow beyond the control of the politicians who then simply let them loose.

The amnesty programme though well intended created an entitlement mentality and appetite for easy and quick money that some of these folks began to turn down jobs offered, preferring the easy millions from the politicians and criminality instead. There is so much more I cannot say publicly, but we need an urgent review of our security setup. This must start by firing ALL heads of security agencies. Appointment of replacements MUST be based on merit alone and not tribal or religious affiliations. We need a National Security Strategic plan encompassing all the states and how these issues will be tackled state by state. Yes, this cannot just be a military or security solution alone. There has to be an Economic remedy as well. Too many folks are unemployed and hopelessness is at an epidemic level. Hopeless folks have nothing to lose. This thread is not a criticism of this govt alone. The problems were initiated long ago by successive govt & politicians who had only short-term mentality to every issue. But since these simmering problems have metastasized under this govt, they must show leadership & competence.

No more talking. No more condolence press releases. No more promises that only perpetuates d victimology of citizens. We need ACTION now by govt. We need CBN to tighten who can access customer data & access must be audit-able to prevent abuses. Effective Data protection laws etc. So what can govt do to bring the nation back from this precipice? There are 7 Steps I will recommend for immediate action. This I am sure will help curb insecurity & the industries that have developed around it. That will be focus of a future Thread. We cannot continue like this.

From d North to d South, all areas of the country is now under daily security breaches and criminality but the traditional media do not seem to be giving it the widespread coverage needed to engender a national outrage at the non-existence of security. This too must change. END
