Richard Norris was 22 when he shot himself in the face. This was back in 1997.

He doesn't remember how or why it happened, but his mom, who was three feet away, said it was an accident. She remembers pieces of Richard’s face showering her body. This was in the living room.

The gunshot had blown off his nose, cheekbones, lips, tongue, teeth, jaw, and chin, leaving just his wide brown eyes and a swirl of nameless twisted flesh.

It is possible to hear the above and never pity Noris. But as his mother said, it was an accident.

Imagine a life without ever going out except at night, hiding your face and not being able to speak, or even eat solid food? And this was for many years.

I think this does not get worse than a man committing suicide.

There was this girl that her account was deleted at Quora only to commit suicide because Quora was now part of her life (she had followers and supports) after going through many types of abuses – rapes upon rapes – and so on (a story for another day though).

Talking about Richard Norris, his life changed a lot, after the surgery. It’s pretty much given me my life back,” Norris said.

For the fact that Norris can actually eat using his jaw and teeth shows the growth of Medical science and what it can do.

After the gun accident, there was a silver lining solution for Norris; after science jumped in to the rescue.

Norris marked the 23rd face transplant since the procedure pioneered seven years ago. He received new teeth, tongue, and upper and lower jaw and facial tissue from the scalp to the base of the neck in what’s considered the most extensive full face transplant to date.

After 114 days after surgery, doctors at the hospital said Norris had exceeded expectations in his recovery as he was able to eat primarily by mouth, taste and smell.

Richard swallows three pills in the morning and two at night in order to keep his immune system at 50 percent strength—just enough to ward off common viral and bacterial infections but not so strong that his own antibodies attack his new face.

In addition to avoiding things that tax his body—everything from the sun to cigarettes. On top of that, Richard visits his doctors every month.



The Bad News

Richard Norris might need your prayers now because since 2016 his kidney function has steadily declined and gone down,” said Dr. Sean Roberts, a kidney specialist at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans.

As a result of this, Norris has been able to avoid dialysis so far but that could change “I would predict sometime later this year.

So that’s why we’ve been aggressively moving to try to find a living donor for him,” said Dr. Roberts. “That would be the best scenario for him to not go to dialysis but instead go straight to a kidney transplant.”



Standing in for Richard Norris

Again, Richard Norris once has to wait in patience, as a guy who’s overcome obstacles most of us could never imagine. This time, it’s a kidney.

Norris family has always relied on faith. They continue to trust that all will work out again.

“If it’s in God’s will he’ll be able to get my kidney,” said Sandra Norris. “If it’s not in God’s will I’m sure there is one out there for him.”
