Zinedine Zidane was left largely disappointed as his Real Madrid players failed to make the most of their chances in a draw at local rivals, Getafe, although the Frenchman did reveal one good thing for his team from La Liga match on Thursday night.

The Real Madrid boss made a number of changes to the starting line-up, most prominent of which was the inclusion of Brahim Diaz along with Gareth Bale and the in-form Karim Benzema in a three-man attack that had seen Benzema score each of Real’s last eight successive goals in the league.

There would be no extension of that record for Benzema, though, while none of his other team-mates were able to rise to the occasion either as Los Blancos played out a 0-0 draw which leaves them six points behind second placed city rivals, Atletico Madrid, on the table.

And while regretting his side failing to take advantage of the chances that came their way, Zidane mentioned that keeping a clean sheet was the only positive for the team after the match. “The good thing is the clean sheet. The rest…” said Zidane after the match.

“You want to make changes [off the bench] to improve things. They didn’t create what I hoped they would. That’s how it is,” the Real Madrid boss added. Zidane saw his players get five out of eight shots on target in a match they had 67% of possession.

Still, it was not enough to break down a Getafe side who now remain in fourth place with 55 points ahead of former Europa League holders, Sevilla, by virtue of a better head-to-head record.

“We had chances to score many times and we didn’t,” the Madrid boss said, as quoted by AS. “We’re a bit annoyed with the result. We deserved a lot more. The players played a very good game. We were good defensively and we weren’t at risk. We were just missing the goal to win the game. We’re a bit angry for not winning.”

While Real Madrid now look set to finish the season in third place behind Barcelona and Atletico after going a third consecutive away game without a win, Getafe could find themselves in the Champions League next season if they remain ahead of Sevilla until the end of the season – there are just four matches left to play.
