Affirming the commitment of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) in checkmating greenhouse gas emissions in the country, Jelani Aliyu, Director General NADDC, has made a call to both manufacturers and importers in the nation’s auto industry to manufacture and import only vehicles with low or zero emissions. Jelani made this call during the presentation of results obtained by the development of fuel economy baseline and inventory in Nigeria at an event in Abuja on Wednesday, April 17, 2019.

The Director General stated that, for many years, there had been no level of emission outlined for importers beyond the fifteen age limit emission. He further revealed that the council was working to develop and implement policies for a transportation system with low emissions in the country. This aligns with the UN Environment Program, specifically the UN Environment’s Chemicals and Waste Sub-program 2018-2019 and Climate Change Sub-program 2018-2019 with an aim “to strengthen the ability of Countries to move towards climate-resilient and low emission pathways for sustainable development and human well-being.”



Jelani also thanked stakeholders for their support and positive contributions in gathering of data for the project. He acknowledged efforts of the Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) which was represented by Prof. James Nyan’aga. According to the Director General, efforts and innovations of the GFEI would greatly enhance implementation of the policy, encourage clean fuel and vehicle usage in the country.

Environmental pollution is an issue in Nigeria. Some of the causes are emissions form vehicles and generators. Every day, thousands of vehicles ply the road, discharging emissions that can cause health problems such as cancer, lung infections and heart diseases amongst others. The degree of environmental pollution in the country is of concern to the government as it makes efforts to control the situation.
